__
But at Sanders kick off event in Brooklyn, a number of minority and female attendees rejected the notion that the presidential hopeful doesnt have broad appeal.
David Shannon, 50, of the Bronx, said he supports Sanders because he sees the senator as a true progressive whos been consistent in his views for years. Sanders is the only person thats running right now in 2020 thats always been the same.
Shannon added that he disagrees with critics who claim Sanders wont appeal to black or minority voters. If you look at him for the last 20 years, hes been fighting for minorities, Shannon said, contending that the incumbents and elites are wrong about Sanders. He pointed to Sanders dedication to getting money out of politics and pledge to end proxy wars as two of the biggest reasons hes behind the senator.
Jessie Rodriguez, 30, originally from Bogota, Colombia, also dismissed the perception that Sanders hasnt reached out enough to women or people of colour and doesnt appeal to these demographics.
Im a minority and a woman, and he reached out to me, Rodriguez told INSIDER.
Rodriguez said she became a US citizen in September 2015 and her support for Sanders was central to this.
I actually became a citizen so I could vote for Bernie, Rodriguez said. I believe in him more than anyone else.

(112,127 posts)Bernie announced that he was running for president on April 30, 2015. So did Jessie Rodriguez decide in April 2015 to get naturalized in time to vote for Bernie? It usually takes years to become a naturalized citizen, but she miraculously accomplished this feat only five months later.
Ms. Rodriguez has the right to vote for whomever she wants, but her statement is dubious. Perhaps she had a crystal ball or some tarot cards?

She apparently anticipated and supplied all of the supporting documentation without any errors when she filed for citizenship, passed the citizenship test, passed the interview process, and attended the naturalization ceremony while minimizing the waiting process between each step. Maybe it was a miracle?

https://www.daytranslations.com/blog/2016/03/how-long-does-it-take-to-become-a-u-s-citizen-7225/Once the USCIS has reviewed and approved your application, you will receive notice from the agency. You'll be informed of your schedule of immigration test and interview. The waiting time for the interview schedule will likewise depend on where you are, as longer waiting lists exist in some areas.
When you pass the exam and the interview, you may still need to wait for a day, 180 days or about 2 years before you can take the oath of citizenship, which is the final step to becoming a U.S. citizen. Your location and the number of people waiting for citizenship approval affect the waiting time for the oath-taking ceremony, where you will receive your certificate of naturalization.
I don't know if Ms. Rodriguez already met the residency requirements, but with the first step taking between six months and one year, it would be very fortunate for someone to get the rest of the process completed so quickly (providing additional documentation, passing the exam, passing the interview and getting the oath administered). The timeline that Ms. Rodriguez experienced would almost definitely be the exception rather than the rule.
However, now that I provided the link supporting my statement and since you are calling my response "bullshit" why don't you provide some links that will support your claim that it only takes about six months?
BTW, the "b" and "v" keys are next to each other on the keyboard since you are so concerned about my spelling/word usage.

(112,127 posts)Even if we give her every benefit to shorten the timeline and it only took six months to become a citizen after she applied, then she would have still filed the N-400 application before Bernie announced his candidacy. Therefore, how was his candidacy central to why she applied? Furthermore, did she take an oath of allegiance to the U.S. or was she taking an oath of allegiance to Bernie if that was the factor that motivated her to apply for citizenship?
Instead of knocking and calling bullshit on DUers who have reasonable questions about what was being reported, perhaps you should wonder about the inconsistencies in Mrs. Rodriguez's statements? Her statements simply don't add up if the content of the article was reported accurately. If I noticed the inconsistencies, then I'm certain that others will also.

(67,782 posts)...five months, even less since the announcement was on April 30.
As the son of a naturalized citizen, it took my mother about a year, and she had been living in the US for 30+ years before she applied AND had an "inside track" by being married to an American for ~25 years.
A little "poetic license" perhaps?

(112,127 posts)I don't know about Mrs. Rodriguez's personal circumstances, but even if she had been in the most favorable circumstance (married to a U.S. citizen and meeting the residency requirements) and it took only six months from the date she applied to taking the oath with all of the steps along the pathway aligned perfectly with minimal delays, then it still would have meant that she filed the application in March 2015. That means that Bernie's candidacy was not central to her filing the application because Bernie had not announced his intentions and that there were other factors that influenced her to apply for citizenship as you mentioned.
However, in the statement that I highlighted Rodriguez is conflating her citizenship with her support for Bernie. In that case someone might ask did she swear a oath of allegiance to the U.S. or did she swear an oath of allegiance to Bernie? Considering that she was previously from Bolivia which is run by a socialist president, does it mean that she supports the current political, social, and economic status of the U.S. or does she want to change the U.S. so that it is more like Bolivia?
Rodriguez's own statement provides the ammunition for people to question her loyalty:
If I picked up on the inconsistencies in what was reported in the article as a lifelong Democrat, then imagine how that statement would get twisted and amplified by right-wing zealots in their anti-immigrant fervor. Mrs. Rodriguez created a credibility problem with her statements and she may have created a legal problem for herself if she lied when taking the oath of allegiance to the United States.
If Mrs. Rodriguez stated that she was a naturalized citizen and that she supported Bernie Sanders, then there wouldn't be an issue--she has the right to vote for whomever she chooses. However, when she links her decision to apply for citizenship based upon a candidacy that Bernie hadn't announced yet, then it raises questions--no crystal ball required.

(14,854 posts)Once one is eligible, it does not take years to process and approve one's application unless there is some kind of discrepancy or a problem that has to be resolved. My husband's application was approved and he was naturalized within a few months time. His brother's application took much longer to process because he has a criminal record.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
TexasTowelie
(112,127 posts)In my comments, I gave credit to Rodriguez for already meeting the residency requirements. The starting point of the timeline I was examining begins with the filing of the N-400 form, then proceeds though the exam, interview and concludes with taking the oath. Even the most optimistic view (see HSB's link in this thread) takes 6 months to one year. Most of the links from other legal firms indicated longer periods of time depending on whether the applicant was married to a citizen, the numbers of applicants in an area which could delay the interview process, and how frequently the naturalization ceremonies occur within that area.
In the case of Rodriguez, she indicated that Bernie was the central reason why she applied. Bernie entered the race on April 30, 2015 and she became a citizen in September. The time elapsed between the two events is between 4 to 5 months. While it might be possible to complete the process that quickly, that would appear to be very expedited compared to what most people and attorneys say it takes.
I find it disconcerting to read that someone decided to become a citizen to vote for a particular candidate. That could be interpreted as an oath of allegiance to a politician rather than to the country. It also fuels the narrative that Democrats are lax on immigration because we are trying to increase the pool of voters for Democratic candidates.
Congratulations to your husband and his brother for completing the naturalization process.

(108,976 posts)According to The Washington Post, the Sanders campaign will advocate for a Medicare-for-all health-care system, a Green New Deal in response to growing concerns about climate change and a $15-an-hour minimum wage for all Americans.
SNIP
All of those issues are of interest to voters of color, but Sanders struggled to convince the majority of them in 2016 that he had better policy solutions to these concerns than did Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. In the South Carolina primary, Sanders won 14 percent of the African American vote, according to exit polls. Clinton, the eventual Democratic nominee, took 86 percent of the vote.
Winning the majority vote of African Americans and Latinos, Asian Americans and other voters of color could be even more challenging as more voters seem excited to get behind candidates they feel better represent them in terms of race, gender and sexual orientation. Sanders appears to be calling on Americans to look beyond identity in determining their choice for the next president.
SNIP
In a New York Times article published Sunday, nearly two dozen of Sanderss current and former advisers and staff members spoke about the 2016 campaigns inability to connect consistently with African American voters. The lawmakers initial leadership team was all white and focused heavily on states with white majorities, such as Iowa and New Hampshire, giving the impression to voters of color that Sanderss message did not include them.
John Solomon told the Times he was originally hired as an organizer for the Sanders campaign before aides assigned him to driving people in a truck around Iowa. Its almost like they didnt need us for anything, Solomon said. It was kind of like, you have black staff just to say you have black staff.

The only candidates we should be against at this time are the ones with an R next to their name or if they have pledged to run against our party's nominee in the general election.
