Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI like Joe Biden but
He really needs to made some amends regarding the drug war and his role in it. He also needs to call for an immediate end to federal marijuana prohibition.

(31,261 posts)he usually said nothing. He didn't announce that he could not support the Dem like Bernie did with Beto and a couple of other Dems.

(22,112 posts)anything anyways so a lot more people than Biden needs to be blamed too.
I'm not defending Biden but there were a lot more people involved in this whole mess in the 'war on drugs'.
Perhaps move on and do it right this time around, which seems to be happening now? E.g., legalized medical M, legalized M in lots of states. Concentrate limited resources on interdiction of 'hard' drugs and spend more on rehab processes (which obviously needs a lot more money too). We keep seeing these desired outcomes but results are sometimes lacking or scrawny.
One note...when drug money/shipments were seized by the police and/or other entities, they seized the assets supposed supplied by illegal drug money, and spent oftentimes the seized funds on themselves, equipment etc. In many cases this was excessive.
I didn't hear of any of these seized funds going to support rehab programs but I may be wrong here in this assumption. The court recently ruled on these types of seizures just recently too, putting an end to excessive asset seizures:
Last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision on the practice of civil asset forfeiture means that the Eighth Amendment's constitutional ban on excessive fines also applies to states (Feb 24, 19)

(3,764 posts)most of them aren't running or considering running for President.
Bernie Sanders got elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. He served as a U.S. Representative for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. Here's an article about his vote for a the 1994 tough-on-crime law but he did as a compromise (https://www.vox.com/2016/2/26/11116412/bernie-sanders-mass-incarceration) and has talked extensively about how this needs to change.
Everyone else running for President wasn't around back then.

(3,764 posts)A lot of politicians change their positions over the years. A lot of people didn't support gay rights a few years ago. Now they do - at least on the Democratic Party side.
Even quite a few Republicans have changed their views on marijuana legalization - I'm thinking John Boehner, Bob Barr and others.

(31,261 posts)We have had Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Orlando, Las Vegas, Pittsburgh. Yet Bernie has remained staunch progun. Bernie must also answer questions about equal pay for women and sexual harrassment since he had issues with both in 2016. The point is that ALL of the candidate standing on stage will have to explain why they chose a particular path. I support Hickenloooer, he should be asked and must answer why he supported fracking in his state and what his position on climate change is. How those questions get answered will determine who I vote for when the primary reaches my state on SEC Tuesday.
