Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe impact of a Sanders or Warren victory could complicate things for Democrats in the Senate.
I was glad that Sherrod Brown decided to not to run in that we could not afford to lose his Senate seat. Both Vermont and Mass. have GOP governors and if sanders or Warren (or both) are on the ticket and win, then we will lose one or two senate seats

(5,304 posts)neither one of them will win. Warren has an outside chance for VP, Sanders is a shoe-in to remain a Senator.

(52,155 posts)in that there has to be a special election quickly in MA. Vermont though would likely be 2 years.

(26,727 posts)State law requires a special election within three months (unless the vacancy is within six months of an election and then it's aligned with that).

(24,329 posts)First, the Governor of Vermont runs every two years, so he'll be up for re-election in 2020
Second, it's unlikely he'd choose a Scott Brown-type
Third, as a Warren supporter, I am not going to worry about who might sit in the senate in 2021 right now
It certainly will not get me to vote for Biden in the primaries over someone I support more strongly

(26,727 posts)Neither Massachusets nor Vermont would be likely to elect a Republican senator.
And neither state allows the governor to pick a lasting replacement. VT's governor doesn't get an appointment at all and MA would at most get about five months (effectively zero if handled correctly.)

(10,302 posts)Former senator to Massachusetts. A Republican who won a race against Martha Coakley for the late Ted Kennedy's old seat... A race where she was in the lead but being a D in a heavily blue area didn't help.
While demographics would favour a Democratic replacement for either Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren it isn't always assured like that. Should either or both of these fine senators end up in the President's or Vice President's office, a properly ran campaign for their replacements would need to be run.

(26,727 posts)Nope... I said that it wasn't very likely. Not at all likely enough to worry about that when selecting a nominee.

This is obviously a long reach attempt to pull down two of the Democrat's strongest candidates in any way possible.

(205,074 posts)I especially like all of our senators who are running - but we also really need their continued leadership in the Senate right now. That's why it's essential that we take back the Senate ASAP.
