The HillSen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) signed a pledge on Tuesday agreeing to run for president as a Democrat, a spokesperson for the longtime independents campaign said.
The move came in response to a rule passed by the Democratic National Committee last year that anyone seeking the partys 2020 presidential nomination must do so as a Democrat.
That rule change was seen by Sanderss supporters as a direct response to the Vermont senator, who identifies as a democratic socialist and has long refused to consider himself a member of the party despite caucusing with Democrats in the Senate.
To be sure, Sanders filed to run for president last month as a Democrat. But he also filed on Monday to run for reelection to his Senate seat in 2024 as an independent.

(144,876 posts)I am not sure how sanders can swear an oath that he is a member of the Democratic Party. sanders has to swear an oath that he is a bona fide Democrat and is faithful to the interests, welfare and success of the Democratic Party of the United States, and will participate in the Convention in good faith. Here are the rules https://www.thegreenpapers.com/P20/2019-01-03-2020_Call_for_the_Convention_12.21.18_w-attachments.pdf
A. are a member of the Democratic Party;
B. will accept the Democratic nomination; and
C. will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party.
This requirement of written affirmation shall not supplant any necessary qualifications a candidate must satisfy at the state level, but is in addition to such affirmations required by individual states and territories. The written affirmation shall be done via an approved format by the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee appended to this Call
There is an oath that sanders and other candidates will have to take

Pursuant to Article IV of the Call for the 2020 Democratic National Convention, I hereby affirm that, upon publicly announcing my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2020 election, I am a member of the Democratic Party. I will run as a Democrat, accept the nomination of my Party, and I will serve as a Democrat if elected. I understand that signing this form does not supplant any legal or Party requirement by any state or territory to qualify for ballot placement in that jurisdiction.
Further, I acknowledge that in submitting this form to the National Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee, I am subject to the provisions of Rule 13.K of the Delegate Selection Rules for the 2020 Democratic National Convention and Article VI of the Call for the 2020 Democratic National Convention that authorize the National Chairperson to determine whether a presidential candidate has established substantial support for their nomination as the Democratic candidate for the Office of the President of the United States, is a bona fide Democrat whose record of public service, accomplishments, public writings and/or public statements affirmatively demonstrate that the candidate is faithful to the interests, welfare and success of the Democratic Party of the United States, and will participate in the Convention in good faith.

I was at the last national convention and I do not think that sanders participated in that convention in good faith. Allowing his delegates to boo Congressman John Lewis is a problem for me

This is simply a replay of what he did last time out when he admitted it was for campaign coverage and $$$.

(4,035 posts)Since he already signed up to run as an independent politician, how can we interpret his signing this pledge as anything other than utterly false, a bad faith pledge, and a determination to (ab)use the Democratic party for his own gain?

(22,911 posts)...and serves as a Democrat if elected. I don't fucking care how Sanders runs in Vermont. That's between him and Vermont voters. I know some strongly disagree but it's a non issue to me. Who would do best as our candidate for President and who would serve best as our President once elected are the only things that really matter to me.

Let's hope a continuation of our blue tsunami through 2020 causes their heads to explode, or at least will allow us to wave those off happily as good riddance.
