Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Reveals She Was Not Asked to Attend Bernie Sanders Kickoff Rally

by Tommy Christopher | Mar 6th, 2019, 12:15 am

-snip-

During an interview with NY1’s Errol Louis that was taped Sunday but aired Tuesday night, the Inside City Hall host asked AOC “Did you attended the Bernie Sanders kickoff this weekend?”

“I did not,” Ocasio-Cortez said with a laugh, adding “Yesterday was my day to take care of myself.”

“I assume he asked you to be there,” Louis remarked.

“Um, he, he didn’t, actually,” AOC replied. “I think that, we’ve been uh, so we’ve been in active conversation, I’ve been speaking with him and several other of the 2020 candidates.”

“And I think that they have really understood and respected the fact that I think that I want to wait until we get a little bit closer,” she continued. “I think we need to have a conversation as a party, and I think that’s endorsing very early in this race prevents us from having that kind of conversation.

She went on to agree with Louis that she will likely choose a presidential candidate to endorse before the New York Democratic primary.

16. Yes, and beyond that, it maximizes her leverage

Her endorsement will be coveted IMO, and I’m not generally a big believer in endorsements moving the needle one way or another. She is smart to keep her cards close to the vest. Strategically there’s no benefit to her endorsing anyone now.

6. Wise move on both Sanders and AOC. Too bad headline tries to make it seem as if

there is a tiff between them. But it’s media’s job to create conflict where there is none and unfortunately many people enjoy it too.

9. Doesn't this sound like Superdelegates trying to "rig" the system?

"[AOC] went on to agree with Louis that she will likely choose a presidential candidate to endorse before the New York Democratic primary."

I suppose it will be ok though, because she'll be choosing a "real progressive" candidate.

10. You're mixing issues...

...endorsements and superdelegates are not in the same ballpark. The issue previously was superdelegate votes being counted in vote totals before they had actually voted giving one candidate an appearance of a giant lead in delegate totals that didn't actually exist. That issue has been addressed now.

Endorsements...who cares? Has anyone even complained about endorsements? Vote for whoever is closest to your policy views.

11. Stop the gaslighting ... the Sanders supporters were complaining ferociously about how

Secretary Clinton had all these endorsements from the Superdelegates before even a single vote was cast and how that was rigging the primaries.

12. Good grief, I'm not gaslighting. This is how it was.

The problem was those delegates endorsements being considered votes in the counts. In fact, it was so bad that Wasserman-Schultz herself asked the networks to stop doing it.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/the-national-media-has-be_b_9364170.html

The way the media is reporting this is incorrect,” Wasserman Schultz told Rachel Maddow of MSNBC on February 20th. “There are not pledged delegates — or ‘super-delegates’ — earned at any of these caucus contests.”

She went on to note that super-delegates are “free to decide [who to vote for] anytime up until July,” and can change their mind at any time — one reason they can’t be reported as being conclusively attached to any particular candidate. “So combining them [the voted-on or ‘earned’ delegates and the super-delegates] at each phase of this contest is not an accurate picture of how this works,” she said.

23. So, it is ok with you if AOC chooses not to endorse Sanders,

but instead stay neutral? You just indicated that is the ideal state for a Superdelegate, which she now is as a Congresswoman.

24. I don't care who endorses anyone or doesn't endorse anyone...

...since that’s not part of my decision making process. If it matters to someone else, that’s part of their own considerations.

What I do care about is those endorsements being turned into, and counted as, votes that didnt really exist. Which won’t be a problem this time around. Good move, DNC.

When the NY Democratic Primary is near, I expect Bernie to do events with local elected officials as he did last time.

22. Upstaging Bernie?

I like Bernie (mostly), but I think he was right not to invite AOC, and she was smart to not endorse anyone at this point. She is a political rock star, and if she were there, it would have taken some of the spotlight off of Bernie. So, Sanders was smart not to invite her to an event that needed to focus mainly on him.

AOC was also smart not to go. It is a good idea for her to stake out her own space independently from any other candidate, including Bernie. At his stage she is wise to keep her distance from appearing to endorse any Democrat. Her endorsement should be carefully considered. There is a lot of race left to run, and her endorsement might be critical by the time the New York Primaries roll around.
