HARRIS GETS BIG DEBATE BOUNCE WHILE BIDEN SINKS QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS;
FOR RELEASE: JULY 2, 2019
DESPITE DROP, BIDEN STILL SEEN AS BEST BET AGAINST TRUMP After Democratic presidential contenders duked it out over two nights of debates, former Vice President Joseph Biden hits his lowest number yet in the Democratic primary race with 22 percent of the vote among Democrats and Democratic leaners, virtually tied with California Sen. Kamala Harris who has 20 percent of the vote. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren follows at 14 percent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is at 13 percent, and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg gets 4 percent, according to a Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University National Poll released today. No other candidate tops 3 percent. https://poll.qu.edu/images/polling/us/us07022019_umfj23.pdf/

2. I copied verbatim.
In today’s poll, Biden has a numerical lead among men with 22 percent, followed by
Sanders at 19 percent and Harris with 14 percent. But among women, Harris has a slight edge with 24 percent to Biden’s 22 percent. The race is similarly close for white Democratic voters, with Biden at 21 percent, and both Harris and Warren at 20 percent. Harris also essentially catches Biden among black Democratic voters, a historically strong voting bloc for Biden, with Biden at 31 percent and Harris at 27 percent. “Round 1 of the Democratic debates puts Senator Kamala Harris and former Vice President Joe Biden on two different trajectories, as support for Harris surges but continues to slip for Biden. Biden’s once commanding lead has evaporated. There are other red flags for him in areas where he still leads, including double digit drops among Democrats and Democratic leaners who view him as the best leader, or as the best candidate to defeat President Trump in 2020,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Mary Snow. https://poll.qu.edu/images/polling/us/us07022019_umfj23.pdf/ Shall I keep going? ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

3. Sure why not? It gets better.
Quinnipiac University Poll/July 2, 2019 – page 2
Democrats and Democratic leaners were also asked which candidate they thought had the best chance of winning against President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, regardless of who they support in the primary. Biden tops the field with 42 percent, which is a drop from the 56 percent that he received on April 30. Harris comes in a distant second with 14 percent in today’s poll, up from 2 percent in April. Sanders receives 13 percent, and no other candidate reaches double digits. When asked who would be the best leader, Biden again tops the field with 26 percent, an 18-point drop from the 44 percent he received the last time this question was asked. Harris finishes second with 16 percent, up from 6 percent in April. Sanders and Warren are tied with 15 percent, while no other candidate reaches double digits. In a question about which candidate has the best policy ideas, Warren takes the lead with 31 percent, compared to 19 percent in April. Sanders is next with 18 percent, while Biden receives 11 percent, a drop from 23 percent in April. Harris is at 8 percent, and no other candidate tops 3 percent. “When it comes to policy ideas, Senator Elizabeth Warren scores higher than any of the Democratic presidential contenders. However, it didn’t give her a boost in her overall numbers in the primary race,” Snow added. https://poll.qu.edu/images/polling/us/us07022019_umfj23.pdf/ ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

4. So did I, from the section you copied. Of course this has already been posted
and discussed at length in another OP, but this isn't the first time we've had multiple threads on the same poll here.
The person who posted the other OP posted a news article about it, but I linked to the Quinnipiac Poll link you're using here, and quoted excerpts of that, in a few of the replies there. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

5. Have some more...
Forty percent of Democrats and Democratic leaning voters say they watched most of the
debates, while another 40 percent paid close attention to news stories about the debates. Of those who did one or the other, 47 percent say Harris did the best job in the recent debates, followed by Warren at 17 percent, Biden at 6 percent, and Sanders at 5 percent. When asked who did the worst job in the debates, 16 percent of these voters say self-help author Marianne Williamson, while Biden receives a nearly identical 15 percent. From June 28 – July 1, Quinnipiac University surveyed 554 Democrats and voters leaning Democratic nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 5 percentage points, including the design effect. https://poll.qu.edu/images/polling/us/us07022019_umfj23.pdf/ That's gonna leave a mark. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

12. There are 24 pages of data to that Quinnipiac Poll
that I linked to and most of it is not favorable to Biden's candidacy. I'm going to repeat just so there's no confusion that I don't dislike Biden personally. His campaign is a mess, his continual gaffes, his candidacy removed from public view, his antiquated politics and the fact that he will be nearly 80 at inauguration are extremely off putting for me. His comment about the NRA pretty much lost me for good. I don't remember his candidacy being so awful in previous election cycles. He is not an exciting candidate this time. He will not motivate people to get off the couch. I don't want to vote for him ever again. But I will if I have to.

20. And after all of that, what really counts is the state polls. The first one released, post-debate,
is the Suffolk University Iowa poll where Biden remained unchanged at 24% (since last month's polling). Harris switched places with Sanders and is now at 16%. So, Biden's lead remains at 8 points (since last month's polling).
The debate did not affect Joe in Iowa. Now, i am looking forward to seeing more Primary state polls and whether Harris is leading in places like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Texas, Nevada and Florida (among other red states)... I have my predictions... ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

9. Good for Kamala
Still its early days. Just as I think people read too much into Biden's early poll numbers, Senator Harris' boost in the polls is still just a small step to the nomination. Another candidate might get a similar boost from one good news cycle.
But still well done, Kamala Harris has proven she's a serious contender. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

16. Joe is in real trouble. It comes through in the desperation of his fans.
He simply did not prepare for that debate and now he’s paying a heavy toll. His steep drop in the polls is very bad news. It doesn’t matter if he still has a slight lead. It’s the trend that counts. Black female Ds made a big shift toward Kamala post-debate. That erases a huge advantage Joe had up til now.
One mistake can be enough to change history (think of stepping on a landmine). Joe made a mistake that first debate, and the applecart has been upset. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

22. It's great the polls are trending in Harris' direction... I don't put much faith in
poll numbers, though. It's too early for polls to mean anything other than to qualify candidates for the debate stage.
With that being said, I find it hard to resist looking at polls. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

24. I know. We've got 6 or 7 months to the first
caucus? Some of these other folks will be long gone by then which is a bummer because we have a stellar field. So now is the only time we get to see them. I watched Marianne Williams on CNN tonight and she was actually very good. I know she isn't everyone's cup of tea. I wonder how long she'll be in?

25. The July 15 deadline to report campaign donations will be a good time
to gauge who will be able to stay in the race. At some point, the less popular campaigns will run out of money.
Williamson does a great job of connecting ideas about policy to a greater purpose. I don't think she'll be in the race much longer since there's so much competition. But like you, I think she does well in interviews. She brings a unique perspective. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |
