Biden's support from black voters cut in half after debate: Reuters/Ipsos poll

4 MIN READ
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former Vice President Joe Biden, the early front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, has lost support among African-Americans after taking heat on racial issues during the partys first debate, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The survey, conducted from Friday to Monday in the days following the debate in Miami, found 22 percent of adults who identify as Democrats or independents said they supported Biden, down 8 percentage points from a similar poll conducted earlier in June.
Support for Biden among blacks, a critical Democratic voting bloc, was cut in half, with about two out of 10 saying they backed President Barack Obamas former vice president, compared with four out of 10 in the June poll.
African-Americans largely supported Biden when he entered the race for the right to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in the November 2020 election.
But they appeared to be looking elsewhere after Kamala Harris, a U.S. senator from California also seeking the presidency, criticized Biden for opposing mandatory busing to integrate schools in the 1970s and for his cooperation with segregationists while he was a young senator.

(7,006 posts)Actually, the support started pulling back AFTER his comments on Working with Racist POS Senator Eastland (who was a Dixie-Crat) on Anti Busing Desegregation measures. It continued after this poor response to being confronted on his past by Senator Kamala Harris at DemDebate #2. Lastly, it kept falling with his comments before the Rainbow Push Organization about a Kid Wearing a "Hoodle" might be a poet laureate and not a "Gangbanger".
Joe is simply put not the candidate for these days and times. He needs to seriously consider dropping out and backing another candidate who can win as he will not gain back the African-American support lost after the three incidents described above.

(7,006 posts)This compares to a June 11, 2019 Quinnipiac University Poll which had Biden at 30 percent, Sanders getting 19 percent, Warren with 15 percent, Buttigieg at 8 percent, and Harris with 7 percent.
In today's poll, Biden has a numerical lead among men with 22 percent, followed by Sanders at 19 percent and Harris with 14 percent. But among women, Harris has a slight edge with 24 percent to Biden's 22 percent. The race is similarly close for white Democratic voters, with Biden at 21 percent, and both Harris and Warren at 20 percent. Harris also essentially catches Biden among black Democratic voters, a historically strong voting bloc for Biden, with Biden at 31 percent and Harris at 27 percent.
"Round 1 of the Democratic debates puts Senator Kamala Harris and former Vice President Joe Biden on two different trajectories, as support for Harris surges but continues to slip for Biden. Biden's once commanding lead has evaporated. There are other red flags for him in areas where he still leads, including double digit drops among Democrats and Democratic leaners who view him as the best leader, or as the best candidate to defeat President Trump in 2020," said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Mary Snow."

GROUPS Notably among groups, while Harris challenged Biden on the subject of race in their debate, his support is especially strong among blacks, 41 percent, 12 points higher than it is overall.
Harris support, by contrast, is not differentiated by race and ethnicity 11 percent among blacks and an identical 11 percent among all leaned Democrats. Warren, for her part, has notably low support among nonwhites, 5 percent.
