IMO calling for private healthcare to be illegal is not smart.

Once universal care is up and running those with employer insurance will see the advantage of no payroll deductions, no co-pays, no 3-5K deductibles if you have to use the insurance.

Those with private insurance, this must be a small percentage of people, probably wealthy people, IMO, must have high premiums and other out-of-pocket expenses as well. Why not let them keep it? They will migrate to the universal care system once it's successful, same with those with employer insurance.

If we take the best features from countries which already have universal care, our taxes will go up but out-of-pocket fees and deductibles and premiums and all of that will go away along with the big worries and fears the vast majority of people have of serious injuries and illnesses.

And one thing never talked about is how businesses will get on board as they no longer will have to pony up big bucks for their employees care, and also will save on administrative costs. I once read that auto companies will save $1500 per vehicle if they don't have to supply healthcare benefits to their workers. That will make American autos much more competitive on the market. Our candidates need to talk up this advantage as well as all the other things above. We have to educate the public not just flat out say their present insurance will be illegal.

What universal care plan are you proposing? Also, universal care doesn't automatically preclude private insurance. There are several nations with universal coverage that have private insurers.

Isn't that a Right Wing talking point.

No candidate has called for making private healthcare illegal.

In fact, no candidate has called for making private health insurance illegal either.

This type of word gamesmanships seems to cross the line into repeating right wing talking points here on DU.

yes I did, and it was Right Wing Talking Point in that thread too, this is what it said:

"This happened in the first debate when all were asked, "Do you want to make private insurance illegal, raise your hand." (or words to that effect.) "

"or words to that effect"

That wasn't the actual question asked in the debate, and the "or words to that effect" quote shows the person posting that didn't bother to provide an accurate quote.

Pardon me for not taking that seriously. It's wrong and dishonest to repeat it.

NO candidate has called to make private insurance illegal. NONE

You are repeating a Right Wing Talking Point and grossly misrepresenting what our candidates' positions are.

And btw, I didn't single out any candidate in my post. Warren's name was not mentioned, or anyone else's.

You maybe mis-remembering this:

Early in the first Democratic presidential debate, all the candidates were asked who would abolish private health insurance. Only two raised their hands: Bill de Blasio, who is not going to be the party’s nominee, and Elizabeth Warren, who might be. Should that possibility come to pass, her frank answer could prove deeply harmful and perhaps deadly.

It's important to keep that option, so people have a choice for better or different care, catered to his/her needs. That doesn't necessarily mean employer-provided.

That's partly what caused the revolt against the ACA by some middle class. Forcing them to buy something they didn't want, at an exorbitant price, and taking away any option for them to buy what they actually need (at lower cost). Choice. People aren't going to go for taking individual choices away.

Of course they’ll make ads like that. And I’m sure they can make an ad of something Biden did (most likely the segregationist comments).

Also, you can bet they’re going to label every one of our candidates a socialist. Is it true? Of course not, but that’s what Republicans do, they LIE and DISTORT.

I think your approach and OP is great. It’s sensible and not incompatible with the approaches that Warren and Harris are advocating. It will get us from here to there.

Warren and Harris are taking the approach of visionaries. Healthcare is their moonshot. It appeals to many of us. I’m disgusted by insurance companies and public subsidies that go into the pockets of CEOs. Medicare Advantage plans are one such subsidy. Insurers have more overhead than the federal government. We pay for that.

Sparking the imagination with an idea can be a powerful motivator to get people to the polls.

Has the time come for the power to go to the people instead of insurance companies? The primaries will help us figure that out and what the base wants.
