Democratic presidential hopeful Julián Castro on Wednesday applauded Nike's decision to nix a pair of sneakers featuring a Betsy Ross flag.
The former Housing and Urban Development secretary said in a CBS News interview that he was "glad to see" the company's decision.
"I was glad to see that. And my hope is that they didn't just do it to do it. They understand the significance there. And look, there are a lot of things in our history that are still very painful," Castro said, pointing to "the Confederate Flag that still flies in some places, and is used as a symbol."
"I believe we need to move towards an inclusive America that understands that pain," he added.

(5,376 posts)You know about these amendments, right?
The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
The 14th amendment was adopted in 1868, after the American Civil War, and addresses the equal protection and rights of former slaves. The 14th amendment limits the action of state and local officials. In addition to equal protection under the law to all citizens, the amendment also addresses what is called "due process", which prevents citizens from being illegally deprived of life, liberty, or property.
So, no one is going to be complaining it was adopted during Slavery times. Everyone knows it was a disgrace to enshrine slavery when the Constitution was adopted, and everyone knows it has been amended.
Our flag today has been "amended" also, the 50 stars US Flag has never been a slavery flag.
Nike should have put THAT flag on its shoes.

(14,689 posts)I hope Biden seizes the opening to appeal to moderate and conservative voters, who he needs to keep on his side.
This would be a perfect opportunity for Joltin Joe to have his Sister Souljah moment. The key to any successful Democratic candidate is to have at least one, if not a dozen or more, Sister Souljah moments and go after the extremists on our side.
Joe needs to differentiate himself from the Orange Menace. While 45 may like to grope the American flag, Biden needs to show that he's the most patriotic candidate in the race. His campaign team is already doing a marvelous job, but they should hold a press conference on Independence Day and condemn Nike and Kaepernick. It would do a lot to help regain the edge that he lost because of the vicious personal attacks by his opponents during the debate.

(14,689 posts)Beating Trump is more important than anything. Even if Biden does agree with Kaepernick, it would be brilliant to take some of Trump's base. Even if its 1% that woukd be enough to swing PA WI and MI.

(10,828 posts)Like a lot of people, I've admired Kaepernick's NFL resistance. But ceding American symbols to the dark side is a very slippery slope. The Betsy Ross flag was flown at President Obama's 2nd inaugural. Hello? Because a bunch of racist jerks have waved the same flag is not a reason to ban it but to embrace it as our own--the good, the bad and the ugly--while striving for those better angels of our nature.
I'm sorry but I reject the idea that the flag is no better than the swastika as Michael Dyson sputtered vehemently a few days ago. That kind of hyperbole will only hand the Trumpsters a victory in 2020. And how far do we go? Scratch out the names of the Founding Fathers, throw out the US Constitution?
On the other hand I don't think Biden or any of our Democratic candidates should condemn the decision, Kaepernick or Nike. Simply point out that the decision was (though well-intentioned) wrong-headed and counterproductive.
