Buttigieg scolds man at campaign event who calls for black people to 'stop committing crimes and doing drugs'
BY MARINA PITOFSKY - 07/04/19 05:07 PM EDT
2020 presidential hopeful and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) called out a man at an Independence Day campaign stop in Iowa who suggested the black residents of his hometown stop committing crimes and doing drugs.
Sir, I think that racism is not going to help us get out of this, Buttigieg responded Thursday when the man made the suggestion at a campaign stop with the Carroll County Democrats.
The man said his comment had nothing to do with race after being booed by the crowd, but Buttigieg responded by arguing that the difference in arrest rates between black and white Americans is evidence of systemic racism.
The fact that a black person is four times as likely as a white person to be incarcerated for the exact same crime is evidence of systemic racism, Buttigieg said.
ABC News was among those that tweeted a video of the exchange.

So, thankfully, he's not likely on our side.
BTW, the reporter was Garrett Haake, who's been a "road warrior" covering the campaigns of both Buttigieg and Biden.

(6,699 posts)Talk about lame. This bozo's comment was typical reich wing insult....an insult from shear stupidity and bigotry. This, my friends, is what this country is up again. The closet doors have ALL been swung wide open, and now these idiots actually think they have a platform for their racist and bigoted thinking. Sad state of affairs.
I came in to this country after WWII. It was a time of great growth and prosperity...for whites. It was a time when love of country made sense. Since that time, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq I and II, and continual warfare since, we have lost our pride in our country. Our military aren't fighting to protect us. They are an imperialist army, fighting to secure corporate interests around the world. Let's not be losing sight of where we really are today. "Thank you for your service" is bull shit, in my view. I'm a Vietnam 11B vet, wounded and disabled. I know what service is all about. We were drafted and forced into supporting a myth. Today, these young men and women join the armed services, and they should know what they are doing. We need to stop pretending they are serving our security...they are not.

(1,184 posts)In fact, the lady I presume to be his wife seems quite receptive to Buttigieg's words. Let's give them some credit Not to mention Mayor Pete's ability to transcend political boundaries with his arguments.
Mayor Pete is a mind we've needed in the Democratic Party for a long time. I've seen no one else better at framing progressive issues.

(1,336 posts)I keep getting test messages from her which of course all spout the "accomplishments" of Trumpelskiltskin. Each time I reply, "You're an idiot and I'm a Canadian, so stop with the messages already".
Any idea how I can stop her?
And as for the armed forces: Last week I listened to a very disturbing CBC report on the infiltration of white supremacist groups in both the US and Canadian armed forces. Two years ago, I had a conversation with a great-nephew who, after serving for just a year, had completely changed his formerly liberal/progressive outlook and was raving about Trump and his reichwing policies. His parents were appalled, as I was. Then we learned that he had left his wife and 2 children for a fellow infantrywoman. This was SO unlike him. (It should also be noted that his unit regularly undertook training exercises with US units. Coincidence? Not sure). But these hate groups are now beginning to interfere with our political landscape and I worry a lot about our federal election in the fall.
So, we Canucks are not immune -- but there are far more of us than them. So take heart, my dear American friends -- there are far more of you than there are of them.
