Related: About this forumProfessor Elizabeth Warren Faces Off Against Sen. Joe Biden
Elizabeth Warren goes toe to toe against Joe Biden over predatory Credit Card companies.
Joe Biden's first comment to Elizabeth Warren got laughs, but seems tone-deaf in 2019. Too dismissive.

(1,810 posts)Thinking about going with Biden for a bit because of the very shady attacks against him. Thankfully Warren doesn't take part in them.

(5,376 posts)When Chris Hayes does flashbacks to past clips, he identifies the year very clearly.
Like on the first one he tells now Senator Warren that he has a clip from 2005 he wants to discuss.
Is 2005 not recent enough to discuss in any case?

(5,376 posts)I don't know why they titled it that way, but that's what is shown in the video.
It had me confused for a second myself. It's obviously Senator Warren talking to Chris Hayes, but I went and checked when that town hall was to be sure.
I guess they were trying to be honest that the flashback clip was from 2005 and used Warren's and Biden's titles from that time.

(33,643 posts)And you're right, I should've been more clear ... the interaction between Warren and Biden is from 2005.
You said it sounds tone-deaf and such in 2019, which is not entirely a fair standard. She was then not in government, and of course not a Senator, she was really just hitting the national stage.
IMHO, she was treated with respect, just not necessarily with deference by Biden. I suspect that the attitude of the vast majority of Senators, esp. 30 year Senators, is that deference to individuals has to be earned, which it had not yet been by Dr. Warren at that point.
And it kinda seems like 'dismissive' is a code-word for 'because she's a woman', when in reality you have no idea whether his tone or attitude would be different if this were a male professor he was speaking to.
Just my $.02.

(5,376 posts)I don't think dismissive is a "code word", its meaning is quite clear.
dismissive
adjective us /dɪsˈmɪs·ɪv/
showing that you think something or someone is not important and not worth considering:
a dismissive, angry look
People can listen to the video clip, hear Joe Biden's tone, and decide if sounds dismissive towards Elizabeth Warren or not.
Personally, it sounded dismissive to me.
People can also decide if it was appropriate to use that tone to ANYONE in such a forum.
Again, personally, it sounded inappropriate for that forum to me.

(8,709 posts)The bankruptcy fight was a pivotal moment for both Warren and Biden, who have each built a political brand based on a defense of the American middle class. Biden is fond of saying that he talks about working families so often his colleagues called him Middle-Class Joe. (Exactly who has ever called him that is a mystery.) Warrens 2017 book was subtitled The Battle to Save Americas Middle Class. But theres a key difference. In Warrens telling, politicians like Joe Biden are exactly who the middle class needs protection from.
Warren, whose research at Harvard focused on the causes of individual bankruptcy, had allies in her fight against Bidens bill. Womens groups, including the National Organization for Womens Legal Defense and Education Fund, opposed the measure because of the disparate impact it would have on women, who made up a rapidly increasing percentage of all personal bankruptcy filings. The legislation also made it harder for single mothers to collect child support from bankrupt exes, by strengthening protections for other creditors.
Some of the same womens groups that were fighting the bill had previously elevated the Delaware senator to exalted status because of his work passing the Violence Against Women Act. And thats what made Bidens support for the measure so grating to Warren.
