Sanders and electability...

%%%%
“Voters are very concerned about electability,” Sanders pollster Ben Tulchin said on the call. “All the data shows that Bernie is a very, very strong candidate when it comes to defeating trump.

Tulchin backed that up by pointing to recent public polling showing Sanders has improved his standing with minority voters and women since the last primary, arguing that roughly half of his supporters in early polls are women and almost half are nonwhite.

Tom Perez, you know the guy who leads The Democratic Party, supported the Mello. But Bernie stumps for the guy and he is the devil.

It’s funny how the “tent” is always big enough for a Senator like Manchin who actively votes for anti abortion legislation and supports anti abortion judges. But a local mayor is beyond the pale and anyone who stumps for him is evil.

Just to be clear, Bernie doesn’t now, or never has, harbored any pro life stances or sponsored any pro life/anti abortion laws.

We are not even in the same universe when it comes to support for abortion issues.

Vice President Biden's comments about abortion in America interview kick off new conversations

In an exclusive interview with America released at the beginning of this week, Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. affirmed that pro-life people "absolutely, positively" are welcome in the Democratic party and that he believes, as a Catholic, that "abortion is always wrong." His comments, very different from most contributions to the political conversation about abortion, are blurring some long-established lines in the culture wars and generating significant interest in the media and among commentators.

Also:

Voting for the Hyde amendment which to this day restricts any federal funds to be used for abortion.

Saying Roe v. Wade “went too far” and he didn’t think “that a woman has the sole right to say what should happen to her body.”

In 1981, successfully proposed an amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act, barring US aid from being used for biomedical research related to abortions. He has had a lasting legacy in this respect: to this day, the amendment has remained a part of the laws covering foreign assistance.

who is pro-life and someone like Mello. Hugh Mello sponsored a bill to take away a woman's right to choose. Also, He was part of a winning strategy to stop women from being able to use health insurance for abortion. Now if you go against Sen. Sander's economic policies, he refuses to endorse, but a candidate who successfully stripped women of their right to choose is fine...no not for me. So I don't see how Sen. Sanders can successfully attack VP Biden on this issue after this. I find Sen. Sanders support for issues that I care about...social justice which includes the right to choose among other things not sufficient to earn my vote in a primary. Many winners were considered "unelectable" for some reason or other. And many losers were chosen for their electability. Jeb Bush was once considered electable while Trump was always and still seems unelectable. Reagan was once "too conservative" to be elected, if you can believe that.

Personally, I believe that every Dem candidate (with the exception of Tulsi Gabbard) would beat Trump.

But among them, Bernie Sanders has the lowest chance in my opinion.

His "electability" is a real issue.... he has a hard-core fervent support of the Bernie Bros.... but that won't translate into grabbing the independents that are needed to win the general.

Our top priority.... above ANY policy considerations has to be who can most easily beat Trump. There are at least 5 candidates who would have an easier time winning the general election than Bernie.

Edit: The United States bombed Afghanistan harder in 2018 than any year since the war began. US airstrikes in Yemen, Somalia, Syria, etc have also increased sharply since Dotard took over. His isolationism is as phony as his populism.

He was supposedly against invading Iraq, promised to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, make our allies pay for our bases, not push Russia in Ukraine (read as, no new war in Europe) raise tariffs and build walls, and suggested Clinton was a war hawk while he was not. I know it's mostly incoherent, but the same paleo-conservatives who liked Buchanan got the message. And it helps explain some of the Sanders/Trump crossover.

We must create an organization like NATO to confront the security threats of the 21st century — an organization that emphasizes cooperation and collaboration to defeat the rise of violent extremism and importantly to address the root causes underlying these brutal acts

We must work with our NATO partners, and expand our coalition to include Russia and members of the Arab League.

and polls this far out mean very little and mainly reflect name recognition. Biden and Bernie are nationally known whereas most of the other candidates are not.

At this same time in:

-2015 Jeb Bush and Scott Walker were way ahead in the polls and Trump was at 1%.
-2007 Obama was well behind Hillary.
-1991 Bill was in single digits well behind Jerry Brown. It was only until late '91/early '92 that Bill started to catch up and pull away.

Even if Bernie does well in IA and NH (which is no guarantee) it says nothing about how he'll do in more diverse and populous states, that he did terribly in against Hillary last time, especially when primaries (as opposed to caucuses) were held.

So far this time, Trump is losing or tied with various potential Democrats, including Sanders. But since it is still early, my thinking right now is based on two factors:
1) It will take an unconventional candidate to beat Trump. Sanders certainly qualifies, but he is not the only one.
2) The nation's pendulum is swing back left, so more progressive candidates have an advantage over moderates for the first time since FDR.

1. Too many Democratic Party members, more than a few here, are 100% sour on him from 2016. Won't go into details and rehash it, but it's a fact. Had a few things gone differently in 2016, he might have had a real shot this time around. I don't believe so at all now. I know I am not supporting him, period.

2. Several candidates have the potential to flip Texas this cycle. Texas is the only state that on it's own, had it flipped in 2016 would have resulted in a different outcome. No other single state in the tRumpublicans camp can say that. BS as candidate completely takes Texas off the table. There is no way in hell that he will ever carry Texas.

3. Florida is the next best bet for us as a party. Already it's a hard, but narrowly winnable card. Just a reminder, BS only got 33% of the primary in 2016 to Hillary's 64%. Democratic Socialist doesn't mean much in California, New York, Oregon, Washington State, etc., but those it definitely will affect a Florida GE outcome. Hell, Democratic Socialist doesn't mean anything to me. I'd have no problem voting for someone who identifies that way. Many of the videos of him out there, and his letters that dare not be posted here? Rest assured, tRumpublicons won't have our same restraint. I don't see any path at all for him taking Florida.

4. The rest of the traditionally Red southern states? LOL, yeah right.

So, this would leave only 1 path.. he would HAVE to win both Ohio and PA, or AZ/WI/OH, or AZ/WI/PA. Should also note, of these potential paths, the ONLY state he carried in the 2016 primaries was Wisconsin.

... and Trump is a winner if'n it ever got that far (which it won't.) But if it did (and it won't) Trump would TOTALLY defeat BS. There are simply no two ways about it.

By the way, we're all still waiting for him to release his full TAX RETURNS. Any word on that? What's the delay? If the tax returns were complete enough to submit to the IRS, then they are complete enough to release to the American voters. No "polishing" or "adjusting" or "clarifying" or "fixing-up" or "fine-tuning" is necessary.

Everyone should play by the same rules. No special favors for anyone! No exceptions.

The American people have the right to know whether or not anyone running to be the "Leader of the Free World" has properly paid his taxes. We have the right for an honest, forthcoming, and COMPLETE release of his FULL tax returns for a period of TEN years so that we can confirm where the candidate's money is coming from, and where the candidate is investing or saving (ie: domestic or off-shore) and what the candidate and his/her spouse claims as "deductibles" or other assets.

We need to see EVERY candidate's tax returns BEFORE the primaries... so that we'll know whether or not he or she is honest and has the integrity to be our party's nominee.

It's complete BS for any candidate to think they're entitled to DELAY and not release their tax returns until they win the nomination. All I'm saying is that the American voters deserve better than the peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek delays and excuses. It just looks suspicious when any candidate is hiding his (or her) tax returns.

He won't do well with PoC and women once his "identity politics" comments and fixation with the white working class over other voting blocs becomes widely known.

He won't win Latinos when his 2007 immigration reform vote (and going on Lou Dobbs to talk about it) becomes widely known.

He won't win swing voters and moderates who dislike high taxes and will not vote for someone with a long history of far-left politics and praise for leftwing dictators (Castro, Noriega) and who honeymooned in the USSR and spoke glowingly of the country during the height of the cold war.

He also won't win over enough white working class votes to offset underperformance with the aforementioned groups. Trump solidly has these voters, who will simply vote for "the real thing" ie a populism that more strongly appeals to their racial resentments, instead of the generic class populism pitched by Sanders.

Sanders views should be thoroughly analyzed, like every other candidate, if he wants to hold the most powerful office in the world.

Sanders has a long and well documented history of apologism and outright praise for left-wing dictatorships such as Cuba, Nicaragua and the USSR - and voters ought to know what his values are.

He casts himself as a democratic socialist in the Euro/Nordic sense - but this clearly is not what his true worldview has been for much of his life.

Rarely does one see fealty to this extent. It's just as unappealing as when it comes from the other side.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

96. Washington Post-'Electability' and 'Bernie' don't belong in the same sentence

“A combined 58 percent of voters are either uncomfortable (37 percent) or have reservations about (21 percent) Bernie Sanders’ 2020 bid. For Elizabeth Warren, it’s a combined 53 percent. And for Kamala Harris and Beto O’Rourke, it’s 41 percent of voters expressing either reservations or discomfort.” Given that the overwhelming number of voters know who Sanders is, there is no excuse — as there is for other candidates — that they have insufficient information to decide whether to vote for him. Sanders is about as well known as former vice president Joe Biden, yet the poll shows that Biden’s comfortable/uncomfortable rating (48/48) clearly outpaces Sanders’s (37/58).....

Sanders’s age, the “socialist” moniker he embraces and his 2016 campaign problem with women are not going to change during the race. It’s unlikely his personality or his familiarity with foreign policy will improve, either. (The guy is 77, and if we have learned anything from Trump, it is that septuagenarians don’t change their personalities nor attend to habitual deficits in knowledge.) Oh, and on Sunday he again promised to release his tax returns, which he promised over a month ago would be “soon.”
