Biden promises to end 'forever wars' as president

?uuid=16e88cee-a40f-11e9-99c6-9c8e992d421e

NEW YORK (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden promised on Thursday to end “forever wars” and reassert American leadership to combat authoritarianism and global instability he says are proliferating under President Donald Trump.

Biden outlined his foreign policy vision in a speech in New York, indicting Trump’s “America first” approach as belligerent, short-sighted, incompetent and ultimately threatening to U.S. interests and democracy across the world.

“The world’s democracies look to America to stand for the values that unite us. ... Donald Trump seems to be on the other team,” Biden said, hammering the president for “embracing dictators who appeal to his vanity” and emboldening a worldwide rise of nationalism, xenophobia and isolationism.

Biden emphasized the urgency for U.S-led global alliances to combat the climate crisis, forge new trade agreements to create a more even international economy and to recommit to nuclear proliferation. If the U.S. doesn’t lead those efforts, Biden said, “rest assured, some nation will step into the vacuum — or no one will, and chaos will prevail.”

And, here's two brilliant reviews from Ben Rhodes, former staffer in the Obama Admin!

The rest is not unimportant but constitutionally his main job is to conduct foreign policy.

but he also wants to reassert American leadership to combat authoritarianism and global instability. The two words that bother me the most are combat authoritarianism. I want to know how he plans to do that.

heads above our other candidates in hands-on experience and knowledge of how the United States is suppose to function--here and abroad--how our domestic policies are linked to our foreign policy and how the world looks with the US withdrawing from global issues and challenges.

Foreign policy is domestic policy and domestic policy is foreign policy.

I suspect we'll be hearing that line again.

We cannot expect any respect in the realm of human rights when we demonstrate ugly and cruel behavior at our own southern border. We cannot expect any cooperation in reducing the damage of Climate Change when we publicly deny its existence and dismantle our own environmental regulations. We cannot expect others to respect democratic institutions when we deliberately sabotage our own. We cannot fight for workers' rights and equality around the world when we refuse to address the problems and inequities on our own soil. And the list goes own, including the vow to abolish forever wars and pulling our support and aid to the Saudis in Yemen. Why? Because it's the right thing to do.

This was Biden calling for the renewal, the restoration of our basic American values. Here and elsewhere. We needn't be the policeman to the world but we can lead with and by the power of our example. And we've had a peek of what the world looks like without US involvement--the rise of nationalism, nativism and hate; the chest-thumping of Putin, Kim Jong Un and other thugs. The runaway corruption.

"Liberalism is obsolete," Putin declared triumphantly.

We need to meet that challenge not with gunpowder but with diplomatic savvy, economic incentives and the willing partnership of our Allies, many of whom think we've lost our way and our minds. We have. But we can find our way back with a better vision of ourselves and a strong commitment to our best, most enduring values.

Joe Biden's speech gave me hope. We can do this!

I thought he started out strong with his speech on his opening day of the campaign in Philadelphia where he bashed Trump but good, but then he took a couple of months off, so to speak, after that. Now he seems to be working much harder with saying a lot of stuff that resonates better. Now that he realizes he has some serious competition, I think it's bringing out the best in him. Long ways to go, though.
