Democratic Primaries

A lot has changed in Sanders world since his 2016 presidential campaign, when he lost the California primary and the Democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton. The Vermont independent wasnt well known then outside his home territory, so his campaign was largely focused on introducing him to voters, particularly in Latino and African American communities.
Now, Sanders is topping most polls among the announced candidates as in, not including former Vice President Joe Biden or former Texas Rep. Beto ORourke. Roughly half his support comes from Latinos and African Americans, some surveys suggest. Sanders favorability rating among Latino voters is 59 percent, according to a recent poll higher than the rest of the announced field.

Harris, Biden and Bernie should all get a respectable amount of delegates out of the California primary, probably an almost even 3-way split.

(32,640 posts)Perhaps you missed the number of bills introduced? It's in the top graphic.
So serving fewer than two terms wouldn't be held against someone serving more in that sort of analysis. In HRC's brief career in the Senate, her record was more productive than many who served in that time with her. I think it's one of the reasons that so many of her progressive Senate peers were supportive of her POTUS nomination.
Of course CHIP wouldn't be included in HRC's Senate career, as her invaluable involvement getting it into being was as FLOTUS, however, I think we can all agree that it's one of the most substantial pieces of legislation to actually deliver affordable health care to those who need it. She definitely earned kudos for that.
Those of us who value health care reform certainly consider it to be one of the highest quality pieces of legislation to come out of the Senate. Along with the ACA, of course.
You're welcome for the data.

(731 posts)Two weeks back I had to attend an obligatory annual social gathering. I was only reluctant to go because I knew from past experience that this was a very pro-Bernie crowd in 2016. Not dead-ender types, in the main, but active Democratic donors and activists with good political connections.
I was not in the mood to engage with enthusiasts over a man that I have negative feelings towards. So I decided that I'd do my best to avoid politics and grin and bear and discussions that proved unavoidable.
So you could have literally knocked me over with a feather when I, a guy who was keeping his lips sealed, heard nothing but anger and disapproval of his candidacy. And much of it expressed in very harsh terms. I didn't hear of a single person in this large gathering offering Sanders support.
I was stunned. These were largely people who supported Sanders in 2016. Active Democratic donors in Los Angeles.
His support, in my estimation, is gone in California.

At the second night of the convention, I received a warning from the Clinton campaign that the sanders delegates were going to boo Congressman John Lewis as part of a planned stunt. I received this warning 20 to 30 minutes before Congressman John Lewis was introduced and the sanders delegates did strongly boo and call Congressman John Lewis names According to my whip, sanders was asked to stop this conduct and declined.
There are a large number of real democrats who have strong feelings about sanders and they will not forgive or forget

(145,086 posts)There are a large number of true blue Democrats who have very strong feelings about sanders. Do you think that sanders permitting his delegates to boo Congressman John Lewis will not come up in the primaries? Do you think that I am supposed to ignore the fact that sanders delegates yelled at my daughter at the national convention and called her the c-word because she would not try to get me to change my vote? sanders was repeatedly asked to try to control his delegates and sanders declined. That is something that I will take into account with respect to my vote. There are a large number of Democrats who are very mad at sanders about the Congressman John Lewis incident. These Democrats are not going to forget the fact that Congressman John Lewis was booed at the National Convention as part of a planned stunt by sanders delegates and sanders refused to stop this stunt
There are a large number of Democrats who have strong feelings about sanders and will work to nominate other candidates. I personally do not believe that sanders is electable. I will be supporting other candidates in the primary because I am convinced that sanders is not electable. I was a maxed out donor for Clinton and will be donating to and working for which ever candidate who I believe is the candidate who is the most electable.
Again, there will be ads used in the primaries concerning the booing of Congressman John Lewis. sanders will not do well in the southern primaries and I doubt that he breaks 15% in Texas on Super Tuesday.

Which is what we could say about the Sanders candidacy as a whole: Theres no way to know how its going to go. But hes got his work cut out for him.
See also https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/19/politics/bernie-sanders-2020-campaign-donald-trump/index.html?utm_source=twCNNp&utm_content=2019-02-20T14%3A52%3A07&utm_term=image&utm_medium=social%C2%A0
One of the secrets to Sanders' success in 2016 was that no one -- most especially Clinton -- thought he had any chance of going anywhere in the race. Clinton largely ignored him for the better part of 2015, allowing some problematic parts of Sanders' record for Democrats -- most notably his voting record on guns -- to go unnoticed. (When the race began to tighten, Clinton gently prodded Sanders on guns and health care.) Sanders, too, largely flew under the radar of investigative reporters for major news outlets who were busy looking into Clinton, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and others seen as more viable candidates. (That reality clearly benefited Donald Trump in the early days of the campaign, as well.)
Sanders will get no pass -- from either the media or his fellow candidates -- this time around. He is among the frontrunners -- and will be treated as such. His wife's time as president of Burlington College could well come up. And his opponents will do a deep dive into his nearly 30 years of votes as a member of the House and Senate. This is all very normal stuff in a campaign. But not for Sanders.
I am glad that sanders will be vetted this cycle.

High enough to generate interest in a Sanders candidacy.
I supported Sanders last time but am not going to in the primaries this time because of reasons similar to yours - high negatives within the party. But Sanders still has supporters on this site and nationally, and the issues that Sanders champions are still very important to our common future. So I don't think it's helpful to portray him one-dimensionally, around the events of the convention. Clearly, those one-dimensional portrayals of the candidate were not helpful for Clinton in 2016 either. We badly need the nominee to win, whoever they are.

Hispanics are unusually loyal to incumbents as a rule. Trump will do much better than imagined with that demographic unless we undertake massive emphasis and chose a nominee who naturally has more pull than normal.
Kamala Harris lost the Hispanic vote to Sanchez despite winning that race by 23 points. I don't know if Harris has learned Spanish since 2016 but I remember that Sanchez tried to use lack of Spanish speaking ability against Harris in that race.

There weren't many Spanish speaking voters in the early Republican primaries to provide any type of boost for Jeb! so he went nowhere.
