Democratic Primaries

Just yesterday, Andrew hit 2% in his fourth and what shouldve been his last qualifying poll for the September debates. Less than 24 hours after that poll was released, the DNC has revoked our second poll, saying that Andrew does not qualify to be on the September stage in Houston.

(38,958 posts)Andrew Yang's presidential campaign accused the Democratic National Committee of rejecting one of the two NBC polls that the tech entrepreneur had promoted as having qualified him for the September presidential debate, which left him short of making the stage for the crucial showdown.
In an email sent to campaigns by the DNC on Tuesday that was obtained by The Hill, the committee argued that a July 11 poll from NBC and The Wall Street Journal and a July 19 poll by NBC and SurveyMonkey, would only count as one poll because they were conducted by the same sponsor NBC.
The email did not refer to Yang specifically, but it came after the Yang campaign had announced in a media statement that it had qualified for the fall debate.
In a separate tweet, Yang cited 4 different polls where the candidate had at least 2 percent support, including listing the 2 NBC polls separately, while touting his qualification for the fall debate.

The article also states that the polling deadline is August 28, so he could still qualify if he can make the numbers in another approved poll.

(1,810 posts)The July 11th NBC poll and the July 19th NBC and SurveyMonkey poll would only be counted as one poll because they were conducted by the same pollster. Sounds like a good move by the DNC. I believe the campaigns can only use one poll conducted by the same outfit during a qualifying period.
I hope the DNC sticks to their guns.
Seems Yang needs to do more than hope. Have a great debate performance and shoot up in the polls.

(5,376 posts)The July 11th NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was performed by Hart Research Associates. This pollster is rated A- by 538.
The July 19th NBC/SurveyMonkey poll was performed by Survey Monkey, a different pollster rated D- by 538.
DNC's opinion is what counts though.

(58,785 posts)At least, part of them.
DNC statement via The Hill: "... A particularly important rule in our debate framework is the requirement that candidates' initial qualifying poll be conducted by different sponsors, or if by the same sponsor, in different geographies," she wrote. "The intent of this rule is to avoid scenarios in which a single poll sponsor or media outlet is responsible for qualifying a candidate through multiple sets of results in the same geography."
Note the 2 criteria in the third paragraph. In that rule, they use the words sponsor and then organization, leaving room for argument about meaning.
However, the intent of this rule was clear from the beginning. IMO, last night's "debate" shows that DNC concern that sponsors like CNN might try to negatively affect our election via the debates and polls is all too justified.
Polling Threshold. Candidates must receive 2% or more support in at least four polls (which may be national polls, or polls in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and/or Nevada) meeting the following criteria (Qualifying Poll Criteria):
Each poll must be sponsored by an approved organization, which presently includes the following: Associated Press, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Des Moines Register, Fox News, Monmouth University, NBC News, New York Times, National Public Radio (NPR), Quinnipiac University, University of New Hampshire, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, and Winthrop University. Any candidates four qualifying polls must be conducted by different organizations, or if by the same organization, must be in different geographical areas. The DNC and its media partners reserve the right to add a Nevada-specific poll sponsor to this list in the near future.
For the September debate, each poll must be publicly released between June 28, 2019, and August 28, 2019. Deadlines for qualifying polls ahead of the October debate will be released in the future.
Each polls candidate support question must have been conducted by reading or presenting a list of Democratic presidential primary candidates to respondents. (Poll questions using an open-ended or un-aided question to gauge presidential primary support will not count).
Each polling result must be the top-line number listed in the original public release from the approved sponsoring organization/institution, whether or not it is a rounded or weighted number.

Yang's loud, and understandably disappointed, howls about the plotting of the evil DNC against him should resonate with some of those still under the influence and might even help him qualify before the deadline. Otoh, appeals trying to capitalize on tragic "evil DNC" delusions are guaranteed to remove candidates from my list.

(5,811 posts)Here's the question you should be asking yourself. Why did Andrew Yang make this public? And in what ways does he plan to use this disclosure to fracture the party or DEM candidates before the general election?
Keep in mind there are candidates and there are disruptors. Disruptors make it much much much harder for us to win.

(5,811 posts)but most of the talk is about Kamala Harris. Even though, she's not in my top five, I would definitely vote for her in the general. If Elizabeth Warren ends up being the nominee, I'd vote for her or Bullock, or Bennet or Amy Klo or Corey Booker or Andrew Yang.
IT DOESN'T MATTER as long as we put a DEMOCRAT in the White House.
The question you raised is the one that tore us apart in 2016.

BTW at no point did I suggest or state that I would not vote for the nominee in the GE. I would vote for a cardboard box before I would vote for The "Esteemed" Mr. Trump.
