Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Cheers On Bernie Sanders With Another Flavor

Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen is throwing his weight behind Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders with a new flavor celebrating the presidential candidate’s 2020 campaign.

On Friday, Cohen unveiled “Bernie’s Back!,” a limited-edition, small-batch treat that makes a big political statement.

As Cohen describes it, the name is a double-entendre. At the core of the confection is a toffee “backbone,” handmade by Cohen himself and meant to symbolize Sanders’ no-nonsense attitude. Hot cinnamon ice cream surrounds the toffee core, symbolizing the act of holding politicians’ feet to the fire. On top lies a solid chocolate disc, representing the wealth of the 1% that the consumer must crush into tiny pieces and distribute down into pint.

Cohen said he’s making between 10 and 40 pints of the flavor, which he and business partner Jerry Greenfield will autograph and raffle off to any contestant who wishes to sign up on Sanders’ campaign site.

Obama: The Ice Cream [UPDATED! A LOT!]
By CHADWICK MATLIN

MARCH 06, 20083:45 PM
Last night, after Barack Obama won Vermont, we called on our loyal readers to help us name an Obama ice cream flavor . Ben & Jerry’s is famous for such flavors as Cherry Garcia (named for the Deadhead), Phish Food (named for the Dead successors), and Americone Dream (named for the not-dead Stephen Colbert), and if Ben & Jerry’s delivered a victory for Obama, then it should also honor him with a taste of his own.

Plenty of you responded with riffs on Obama’s name. Peanut Butter Barackle, Obamana Split, and Barackadamia Nut all raised a chuckle. But it was Aaron Nathan of Amherst, Mass., who really impressed. Eschewing Obama’s name, he reached another level of ingenuity when he sent in his entry: “Yes, Pecan!”

Bravo, Aaron. Bravo.

But that must be TOTALLY the fault of Unilever...

Selling out to corporate “suits” is an ironic ending for the company founded in 1978 by two former hippies with $12,000--$4,000 of it borrowed. Cohen and Greenfield took the company public in 1985.

Although they had fended off takeover offers in the past, it had become clear to the founders that Ben & Jerry’s needed more resources and broader distribution channels. Last December, to the dismay of many Vermonters and some of its franchisees, the company let it be known it was considering other opportunities.

In March and April last year, Greenpeace filmed a rainforest area in Indonesia – and uncovered a destruction in an unimaginable extent: For a palm oil plantation, a company has destroyed hectares of forest land – apparently supplying Nestlé, Mars, PepsiCo and Unilever.

Ben Cohen is super rich after selling Ben & Jerry's to Unilever the British-Dutch conglomerate and Ben & Jerry's ice cream has agreed to stop claiming it is All Natural

From Wikipedia:
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer-advocacy group, urged Ben & Jerry's to stop labeling their ice cream as "all natural" due to the company's use of corn syrup, alkalised cocoa, and other chemically modified ingredients.[53] In September 2010, the company agreed to stop labeling their ice cream and frozen yogurt as "all natural"

Unilever does have a public image as a multi national corporation focusing on sustainability.

That's pretty great for a multinational mega-corporation. And DEFINITELY for Ben and Jerry.

Purveyor of such household names as Ponds, Vaseline, Ragu and Lipton Tea, Unilever is also the world’s largest maker of ice cream, owning the Breyer’s and Good Humor premium brands.
