Joe is doing well https://www.politicususa.com/2019/08/02/joe-biden-is-rolling-as-no-one-gains-ground-after-second-debate.html
There is a sizable segment of Democrats who like and want Joe Biden as the partys nominee. The possibility is growing that Biden catches fire in the early voting states and rolls to the nomination. The other candidates the nomination may have to beat Biden early or not at all, as these debates arent moving the needle and shifting voters away from the former vice president.

On paper, Biden could face competition for moderate and older voters from the other centrists in the field. But none of them have yet consolidated much support. And while some of the moderate candidates performed well over the two nightsparticularly Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado and Montana Governor Steve Bullocknone of them had a breakout moment likely to dramatically improve their position. Meanwhile, several of the relative moderates, including Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, delivered low-wattage performances that may further hurt their standing in the polls.....
A recent NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist College poll underscores the challenge Democrats may face selling many of those ideas. In that survey, 54 percent of Americans opposed eliminating private insurance; 62 percent opposed covering the undocumented in any national health-care system; and 66 percent opposed decriminalizing unauthorized border crossings.
Even among Democrats who identified as moderate or conservative, nearly half opposed covering the undocumented, and a clear majority opposed decriminalizing border crossings, according to detailed results provided to The Atlantic by Marist. A solid majority of those more moderate Democrats also rejected ending the death penalty, which every major Democratic contender has now embraced. In the survey, a national health-care system that eliminates private insurance did register support from a clear majority of both liberal Democrats and moderates. But, for Democrats primarily concerned about electability, the overall publics opposition to that idea may still make them hesitant about supporting a candidate who advocates for it.

So he needs to do the research, study it, and break it down for the public in easy to understand language.

(10,721 posts)The dominant narrative is like a self-fulfilling prophecy, and most people aren't paying attention at this point. So, name recognition is king. Those who are polling relatively well but lack name recognition have benefited from their charisma, which results in more press, which boosts name recognition. DU is not reflective of the overall population. Not even remotely. Most people are not political junkies and couldn't name 3 candidates.
All we really know right now is which candidates don't stand a chance (i.e., all of those who won't be on stage in September).
Biden is certainly the favorite, though lacking in enthusiastic support, but all it would take to change the narrative is for him to lose either Iowa or New Hampshire. Then he's vulnerable in South Carolina and the Super Tuesday states. We're still 6 months away from voting. That's an eternity in politics.

(8,144 posts)new ideas. No other candidate has framed the fight as a struggle for the soul of America. This
old-fashioned idea grabs me, not ideology.
Bidens accomplishments, life story, qualifications and experience, his empathy and his past service to our country inspire me. That he has more to do inspires me. And despite not needing the utter rubbish that has been thrown at him at this stage of his journey, he persists because he knows he can lift us up out of this terrible place and do the tiresome work needed to mop up after Trump.
Ill take Joes gravitas over razzle-dazzle debate theatrics any day.

(48,731 posts)have sort of fallen in love with them recently.
With Joe, we've known him for decades.
I think that's a factor in the media coverage, too. We've seen the media develop media crushes on one lesser-known candidate after another, then start to lose interest and switch to the next flavor of the month, or the quarter. It's much easier for them to find something new to write about with newer candidates.
I also believe that Joe maintaining his front-runner status for so long works against his supporters feeling the same sense of NEEDING to be an enthusiastic supporter that the people supporting candidates trailing him in the polls are feeling.
You have to be REALLY enthusiastic about a candidate polling in single digits to continue supporting him or her.

(173 posts)Biden is the most recognizable face and name in the field of candidates. Thats why hes getting 47% of support. Hes also a moderate. I wouldnt equate level of current support with enthusiasm. He May be a safer bet than some other candidates, but he seems quite boring frankly. How can someone with very little enthusiasm be expected or credited for enthusing others? Well see how he does when the real campaigning begins.

(8,144 posts)warning of a missile incoming should be listened to. Any day, a nuclear conflict in some part of the world can start us on a path to destruction, even before climate change catastrophe. Biden is the
only candidate with sufficient knowledge, experience, and stature on the world stage to help us and our allies navigate these dangerous waters.
So yeah, hes the candidate to keep us safer and if that means hes the safe candidate I am all for him.

And many of us have a second choice. In the end, it is up to many more voters than our small group here.
Given constantly changing circumstances, no one can make the case that Bidens perceived electability will last.

But I saw a tweet just today from someone in Orange County CA about her friends' parents who are lifelong Republicans but who can't stand Trump saying they hope Biden is the Democratic nominee so they can vote for him.
And in the general election polls that do include Republicans as well as Dems and independents, Biden usually beats Trump, and usually by more than other Dems beat him.

(3,691 posts)Warren and Sanders seem to be fighting for the Bernie coalition from 2016 this time around which has them both polling less than 20% consistently. Combined they are still usually Below Biden's polling. I think the 15% rule will be a real problem for most candidates in the early states allowing Biden to get a nice delegate cushion.
A note about the 15% threshold that most articles miss. A candidate will still be allocated some delegates if they reach the 15% threshold in a Congressional District even though they don't reach 15% in the State.

I'm campaigning for, and donating to, working for, and voting for the Democratic candidate.
But if you can't cut it. If you stumble and fail to defeat trump, it will be on you, because you should know whether you can hold it together or not. You didn't inspire me in the debates. You've got to have it more together. If you think Kamala was bad, you better gear up for the trump attacks. You'll have all the media after you.
