STANDING ROCK, N.D. Tulsi Gabbard is running for president of a country that she believes has wrought horror on the world, and she wants its citizens to remember that.
She is from Hawaii, and she spends each morning surfing. But that is not what she talks about in this unlikely campaign. She talks about the horror.
She lists countries: Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Cuba, Vietnam, Iraq. Failure after failure, she says. To drive the point home, she wants to meet on a Sioux tribe reservation in North Dakota, where, she explains, the United States government committed its original atrocity.
These Indigenous people have been disrespected, mistreated with broken promises and desecrated lands, Ms. Gabbard says.

(11,955 posts)Especially since you posted it 3x in this thread, I think it's worth pointing out (as I've posted before) that if you look at the date of that video, it was immediately after the Barr "summary" which basically said that Trump did not collude, and to be fair, at the time, that was widely believed to be accurate, and was certainly being reported that way by most if not all the mainstream media. In that context, it was not unreasonable thing for her to say.

Tulsi Gabbard: Trump indictment might have 'led to civil war'

(11,955 posts)Lots of people (not just Republicans!) were saying it was time to move on, after that Barr summary was released, she was hardly alone. I'm all for fair critiques of any of our candidates, but not hit jobs that take things out of context to make them sound worse than they are, whether it's my preferred candidate or someone else. That's not what we should be doing here.
If she stands by that quote now, absolutely, go after her on it. But if she only said it before the report was released and when almost everyone in the media was accepting the Barr summary as if it were legitimate, then it's not fair to leave that context out, if it even makes sense to promote it at all.
I was shocked when I first read she'd said that. Knowing the full context, I realize I was being manipulated. It reminded me to be more careful about believing things, even when posted by presumed "trustworthy" sources. You have to get the context on ANY quote.
Also, in that link that you included there (from The Hill), it says that at the same time, she also called for the release of the full report, and the use of paper ballots to help insure the integrity of our elections, protect them from Russian or other interference. Further showing she was not looking to sweep things under the rug or absolve Russia with that other part of the statement that is getting more notice.

(11,955 posts)...that Barr's summary was actually completely on the money? That Trump really did come out of the investigation as well as Barr implied he did? In that case, I suspect that Gabbard's statement would have been seen today as perfectly acceptable. Even with that 'civil war' reference. That's why I think knowing the context of when the statement was said (and what commonly accepted knowledge was at the time) is so important in evaluating the words, and why I don't find them as off-putting as I did before I knew the context.

(58,785 posts)The logic is to prey on useful weaknesses to create useful idiots.
The logic is to distract people into forgetting to look right for oncoming enemies before proceeding. Every day until it's over.
But if you figure out how the massacre at Bear River would justify anyone helping elect Republicans by dumping it on today's Democrats, by all means feel free to lay that reasoning right out.

But if you listen closely, she makes statements that are incongruent and negative.
I am repelled by a Democrat touting military experience as the #1 reason to be elected, saying "I will protect you".
Equally repelling are attacks on other Dems, inability to condemn murderous dictators (sound familiar?), and playing the victim.

(11,955 posts)Before discussion can continue about Mr. Butlers role, Mr. Moore, her campaign adviser, interjects. How much do you think Jeremiah Wright affected Obamas presidency? he asks.
What's the point of that interjection? I'm not sure what this campaign adviser was trying to get across with that comment, but I doubt it was to remind people that that association with a "non traditional" pastor was, in fact, something that almost brought Obama's candidacy down.

(4,314 posts)that many people felt to enlist after 911. It was quite obvious in the news that we were lied into the war, that there was no WMD. That Al Queda was not in Iraq, that Bush 2 had a vendetta against Saddam because of his father and then there was the oil and Cheney. I think people who enlisted out of patriotism were either very stupid or opportunists looking for a gig. I don't know which Gabbard is, opportunist or stupid. I watched just part of American Sniper last night because Clint Eastwood makes fairly good movies, but I couldn't watch it. All that rah, rah, what a hero and patriot. Eastwood surely knows better, but he loves the macho patriot angle.
But thanks for the reality check, that it was common to enlist because of patriotism.

(11,955 posts)In 2004 (when Gabbard volunteered to go to Iraq), there were an awful lot of people that was NOT obvious to. Enough, in fact, to get Bush re-elected. Heck, in 2004, the New York Times was still standing behind Judith Miller's WMD reporting.

(58,785 posts)has its demographics as a reason to run as a Democrat. And of course that Democrats reject her campaign to death, asap. Russia of course is not going to reject her as long as she keeps producing this stuff. That has to be our job.
She reminds me that a political psychologist, after describing the many similarities between those prone to extremism on the right and the left, described an important difference humorously as that those on the right hate everyone else while those on the left hate themselves. She's so changeable, though, and I intend never to know her well enough to guess where she falls at any particular time. Suspect it may depend on a combination of her dopamine level and who she needs to please at the moment.
