What did vegan Cory Booker eat at the Iowa State Fair?

The Iowa State Fair, with its pork chops on a stick and massive turkey legs, might not be the obvious place for a vegan to get something to eat. But U.S. Sen Cory Booker of New Jersey, a vegan, did find something to eat Saturday — and it was even deep-fried.

Veggie-Table, a small yellow booth located along the Grand Concourse, offers vegetarian and vegan fair foods. Booker ordered a "Golden Fried" peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a stick, which one employee said was one of the few vegan items they offered. He took one bite and immediately ordered another. "It's a little slice of heaven," Booker told reporters.

As Booker started in on his second PB&J, he joked that the Democratic race should be decided by competitive eating. "I would love to have a PB&J on a stick eating contest, he said. "I feel like I can take the field, actually. Gillibrand might give me a run for my money."

The day before, U.S. Rep Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, a vegetarian Democrat running for president, also stopped at Veggie-Table. Along with the fried snack, her team also purchased a veggie corndog as a horde of reporters and photographers looked on.

where my Grandparents had lived/grown up and where I'd spent much of my childhood visiting.

Hearing these steak and potato small town farmers now ordering salads and talking their cholesterol was almost mind-numbing. So, I guess there is continued evolution--even in Iowa!

A jelly filled doughnut is more of a 'cake-like' pastry.

Deep Fried PB&J Sandwiches

Heat oil in a large saucepan to 350 degrees.

Cut each bread slice into a 3 ½ circle using a round cookie cutter.

Spread 1 Tbsp peanut butter onto 4 circles.
Top with 1 Tbsp of jam.
Top with another bread circle.
Seal the edges by pressing firmly and squeezing the two pieces of bread together.

Place sandwiches into the hot oil and fry until golden brown.

Transfer to paper towels and allow to cool slightly.

He will fit in as well as I did when all of my friends in Austin went vegetarian back in the 90s. I think that all of those friends returned to eating meat eventually.

I would definitely try this. At least Booker wasn't eating the deep-fried butter that was announced last year. That sounded ghastly. My arteries hurt just thinking about it.
