Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWarren is great, but I fear she may get the Al Gore treatment from the press.
For most of his career Gore had a reputation as being a boy scout. His honesty and integrity were unchallenged. Karl Rove then employed his strategy of attacking his opponent's strength, and the media went along with it (the internet, Love Canal, Love Story, etc). Soon many people believed that Gore was the biggest liar since Nixon.
trump has already shown that he will try to make Warren's credibility an issue. He will claim that she lied about her being part Native American, and that all of her many accomplishments in life are due to affirmative action based on that lie. This tactic will resonate for many people who are opposed to affirmative action. The media will report trump's allegations in a misguided attempt to be even handed (the old problem of false equivalency). Also because it makes for entertaining TV and a close race is good for ratings.
I think Warren would be a great president, but I am worried that she may get Gored.

The so-called "liberal" media is anything but.
They give an Unhinged Maniac and Criminal unlimited access to the airwaves and then normalize his unhinged comments. So you KNOW that they will throw every criticism - fact-based or not - at ANY Democratic candidate.
We must not let them distract - or divide - us.

The question to be worrying about is: how will the candidate and other party members counter/respond? And will that response be effective/adequate?

(1,810 posts)Very little fire with a Boy Scout demeanor. Then he picked someone for V.P. that made his candidacy a joke. I was shaking my head at the campaign her ran. I went and saw he and JL at a campaign rally. It was nap worthy. Nothing better than watching JL trying to warm up a crowd. Amazing that Gore still won it only to be beat out by the Republican machine.

(15,366 posts)but I agree with much of what you say.
And choosing Lieberman - who ended up stabbing him in the back during the FL vote count - was a real mistake. IMO, the ONLY consolation from the 2000 loss was that Lieberman's later Presidential runs fizzled. Thank heavens!
Gore also refused to let the highly popular Bill Clinton campaign for him, as Clinton literally begged to do.

(11,982 posts)...Warren's ONE sketchy thing, which she probably didn't even get any benefit from, and it is the thing about her candidacy I worry about most. And it's absurd for Trump to essentially be calling someone out on their integrity. It's as if Warren is running against Charles Manson, and Manson comes at her with, "My opponent once swatted a fly!" But absurd or not, I'm not sure it wouldn't work. And maybe that's the tact she needs to take, owning up to what is relatively a "swatting the fly" level of integrity lapse in order to attack Trump's countless huge lapses in integrity. But it's tricky.

We can expect sniping at our candidates from even more liberal reporters and pundits if their favorite candidate isn't the nominee.
It's important that Democrats NOT buy into those false media narratives and amplify them.
