Why do Steve Bannon and David Duke like Tulsi Gabbard so much? Stephen Colbert asks her.

https://www.newsweek.com/why-do-steve-bannon-and-david-duke-democrat-tulsi-gabbard-so-much-stephen-1359488

“What do you make of how much they like you?” Colbert inquired, also asking why Gabbard had received support from conservative congressman Matt Gaetz. The Democratic presidential hopeful did not offer an answer and condemned the far-right figures.

“You should ask them,” she said. “Look, I have denounced strongly, time and again, the white nationalist views of David Duke and racist and bigoted views of people who are fomenting hatred and even violence. This is something that is unacceptable and something we should all stand up and condemn,” Gabbard added.

However, the Iraq War veteran has received consistent support from right-wing politicians, who are usually hostile to pro-environment, pro-gun control Democrats like Gabbard, because of her unorthodox foreign policy stance. Her isolationist position, criticism of former President Barack Obama’s foreign policy agenda and support for Trump’s rapprochement with North Korea have won her friends in unlikely places.

The Daily Beast reported Gabbard was briefly considered for a cabinet position in the current administration. In January Fox News’ Tucker Carlson has said the Hawaii congresswoman has been unfairly attacked for criticizing intervention in Syria and for overtures made to Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad. Gabbard told CNN in January, following her announcement that she would run for the 2020 Democratic nomination, she did not regret meeting the Syrian leader. She met with Assad in 2017, six years into the country’s civil war that has claimed 400,000 lives, according to the United Nations.

It does deflect from some of the know thoughts of Duke and Bannon when reflection on Gabbard. If I remember correctly, they always reference her foreign policy positions, not anything to do with support of white nationalists. It's still a good answer for the general public in this instance. A little short for the well informed.

and she has sided with the R's on votes against Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

They probably like that, too.

But supporters attracted by Gabbard’s old-left anti-interventionism are likely to be less enamored with her stances on anti-terrorism measures. A 2015 vote on a bill that would subject Iraqi and Syrian refugees to the predecessor of Trump’s “extreme vetting” won Gabbard friends in Republican circles. The bill — which did not pass the Senate — required every refugee admitted to the country to receive individual vetting that, according to Representative John Conyers at the time, “would effectively deny refugee status for Syrians and Iraqis who are victims of terrorism in their own homelands.”

“It’s important for anyone who really cares about keeping our refugee programs open to seriously consider the negative impact to such programs if a terrorist attack occurred and a refugee were involved,” said Gabbard in a statement after the vote. She said this as progressive groups were, for the most part, lobbying the Obama (and then Trump) administrations to accept larger numbers of Syrian refugees.

Steve Bannon, Trump’s former adviser, spoke highly of Gabbard during the 2016 election. A source from the transition team told the Hill that Bannon loved Gabbard and wanted to work with her “on everything.” That praise precipitated a meeting with the then-incoming president and his team at Trump Tower shortly after the election, at which time it was rumored that Gabbard was in the running for secretary of State.

“She would fit perfectly too [inside the administration],” the source told the Hill. “She gets the foreign policy stuff, the Islamic terrorism stuff.”

It is because they are anti-interventionists, isolationists and so forth . . . I would just remind people that a stopped clock is right at least twice a day . . .

The candidate preference screen I got before this one is very nifty -- I believe other boards could adopt that kind of thing for election discussion.
