Democratic Primaries

Sarandon is a malignant force who has no place in our primary.

(7,430 posts)and will tend to press ideology over consensus. But, in truth, there is no ideology. It's an illusion if ideology is framed as the concrete objective, not the general pathway. Sarandon seems to want the concrete objective. She wants her dreams to become real when they will always remain a dream. That's great for coffee conversation, but not so good for the electoral politics of today.

(8,964 posts)I would not rule out the possibility that Sarandon as a skilled actor is also a closet reactionary, reaping in all the targeted tax cuts that wealth affords her. With a purely ideological stance, she can rest assured that none of what she publicly embraces will come to fruition. Best of both worlds: Posing as a "revolutionary" while helping to ensure that none of it ever happens, with hard-fought gains being lost as a result of divide-and-conquer politics. Straight out of the right-wing playbook.

(12,448 posts)I can't prove it of course, but it would certainly be in her best financial interest, given his campaign promise of a giant tax cut. As you say, she is a skilled actor, so, Trump-like, she pretended to be for "the people." In her mind (and Trump's), that's the "little people."
She even hinted at a Trump vote a couple of times. She said he would be better than Hillary(!) and that he'd be the cause of "The Revolution" so his election would be a benefit.
I despise her as much as I despise Trump. (That's a lot.)

(99 posts)I'll never understand it. Our party has pretty much all of Hollywood behind us. But one actress, whose best acting years are well behind her, says some random thing and people freak out, obsess for years, and can't just learn to ignore her.
Every time I see something about Sarandon online - which is constantly for some reason - all I can think of is, "KHHHHAAAAANNNN!!!"
I get the point. Use her to take well-past tiresome pot shots at Sanders. That's all it's ever really about (talk about tiresome).
If I were Sarandon, I'd be tickled by it. To think she has this dread overlord power over our entire democracy to generate so much attention every time she's in front of a microphone.
I get that people want their chosen scapegoats for 2016 - you can always tell where someone stands based on who they blame. But it's 2019. Just. Move. On.
Anyway. Going to have blueberry cobbler for breakfast. Seems a better use of time than worrying what an actress thinks about anything.

She also campaigned for Ralph Nader in 2000 - look how that turned out. She is a malignant force and we know by the numbers what happened in WI, MI, and PA by the Jill Stein totals.

(99 posts)In every election. It's a consequence of our two party system. There will always be some bleed off in various directions. And in very close elections, they can tip it.
To constantly bewail them seems entirely futile to me. The sun also rose in the east this morning. I didn't rend my clothes and run out into traffic on account.
We could try to include them more, to staunch that bleed off as much as possible. But some in our party like to bash the "fringe" Left for sport, so that'll never happen. (As if all Greens are somehow crazy radical Leftists. No, most of them are just disaffected from the parties).
I've never voted Green. Never would. But I also don't feel the need for whipping boys and girls within my own coalition. "We're a big tent! Unite! Except for you assholes over there. Eff you!" *Democrats lose* "Whhhhyyyyy didn't you vote for us you evil, horrid people!"
Yeah. Total mystery.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
You are clearly missing the point. Sarandon actively endorsed Jill Stein and encouraged other Bernie supporters to vote for Jill Stein as she did. Jill Stein's votes in MI, WI, and PA were greater than the difference between Trump and Clinton. As icing on the cake, she said Trump would be a better president than Clinton. And you wonder why members here are not happy with her comments. This site is supposed to be pro-Democrat - is it not?

(92,136 posts)for Jill Stein, encourage others to do likewise, and have no regrets doing so, or at the very least admitting they made a mistake , or an error in judgement, especially after everything the country has been through, that has nothing to do with a big tent, or uniting people. It is either their way or screw you
Because of everything they have done and said, there is every reasonable assumption that if their preferred candidate isnt the one of their choosing they will perform exactly as they have previously, and that is doing everything to undermine and actively work to see the Democratic nominee loses
To ignore the fact that is exactly what they did in 2016, is naive at best
In every critical swing state Hillary lost by less than 1%, and Jill Stein received 1% of the vote in those states
It didnt take much either
Only a fool makes a coalition with someone who vows to destroy you if they dont get their way
They were a contributing factor to our losing two SC appointments, and putting trump in the WH, and they have no remorse about it, which is one of the big reason there is so much animosity toward them
The bottom line is they cannot be trusted
and they deserve every bit of flack and criticism coming to them
There is no big tent for them, they are not Democrats

(8,572 posts)Like me. I've been here since 03. Even counting her distractive behavior in 2016 there is not enough there there to make me feel she and her political antics are anything but a waste of my time. She is not a hugely influential person, she is an actress. Period.
And it is an obsession with some, and it is freaking out, of a sort...there can be zero stories about her in the news but out of the blue, someone here will randomly start a thread titled something like 'Fuck Susan Sarandon'. It would be funny if it wasn't kinda pathetic and annoying.

(99 posts)I'm aware of Sarandon and what she's said in the past.
Doesn't answer my question, however.
At last count, there were at least four threads posted within hours about this actress. And Twitter is alight about it apparently (I don't know, I don't live there. The overwhelming majority of American voters don't).
One actress.
If some Greens like Bernie, so what? He's not my guy this cycle, but. so. what? Maybe he'd bring in some of those voters. I vote Democratic because I think the party is the best vehicle within our system to bring progress to local and federal governments. Note, I said within our system. Our system kind of sucks. Some percentage of people will always, always check out from it. It has always been so in our history. It's not as if third parties are a new object or consideration in our election cycles. They have to be anticipated.
The constant harping reeks of, "The beatings will continue until morale improves." Beat away. But I hope no one is pretending they're engaged in anything productive.
Warren is currently my number two. I admire her greatly, and apparently I should be offended or something. Or outraged. Or should spend a lot of time grousing about Sarandon and Bernie.
Yeah, that's a no for me, dawg. I'm worried about winning elections, not grinding axes. The anti-Bernie infatuation is utterly out of hand in some parts of the party. Every Bernie thread on this board is utterly unreadable and intentionally made so through disruptive behavior. Three years on, still with the obsession over him and all the periphery.
One thing I find incredibly interesting is that the Libertarian party received three times as many votes in the three Wall states we lost than the Green Party. Three times! They are never mentioned. Only Stein, Sarandon, and others are ever bothered with. Almost always women, I would note (interesting, n'est-ce pas?). A lot of social libertarians are liberals. They never get brought up. Nah. Just women who voted Green. Should we just bust out some stakes and get that one over with?
People can flail away. It's unhelpful, but it's a free country.
Sanders is around 2nd place in the primary. Constantly wailing on him is going to disaffect some of his voters. It will turn people off. People who are serious about unity and winning no matter what don't engage in this behavior, IMO.
