'Stop Your Cowardice': In Kentucky, Sanders Calls Out McConnell

for Ignoring Protesting Coal Miners and Blocking $15 Minimum Wage

Hours after rallying with striking AT&T workers in Louisville, Kentucky, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday used his visit to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's home state to blast the Republican for refusing to allow a vote on legislation to raise the minimum wage and turning his back on laid off coal miners protesting over lack of pay.

"I say to Senator McConnell: Stop worrying about your billionaire friends, they're doing just fine," said Sanders, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate. "Start worrying about the working families of your state and around this country who are struggling to keep their heads above water."

As Common Dreams reported last month, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025, but McConnell signaled he would not even allow the bill to reach the Senate floor for a vote.

Additionally, a group of retired Kentucky coal miners suffering from black lung traveled to Washington, D.C. last month to meet with McConnell and demand action on legislation to fund their medical care. As Common Dreams reported, the coal miners said McConnell was "rude" during their meeting and brushed off their concerns.

He is full of hubris and is enriching himself with Russian money in front of us all. He is sticking it to KY and laughing all the way to the bank. Yes, he is a traitor. He can’t be bothered with the press or his constituents...he clearly doesn’t care and is only accountable to Oleg Deripaska and Russia. He knows exactly what he is doing.

That statement doesn't really make sense in any other way than as bravado. What is Sander's implying really? He could be more accurate and precise, IMHO.

McConnell is a brick wall and tenacious in protecting the vested interests and the party that he represents stands for, it just doesn't have anything to do with the benefit of the humanity or regular citizens. I don't think that is a matter of cowardice, it is a matter of betrayal.

Despicable? Obstructionist? Bought and owned? I could go on, but that is a checklist that is more apropos.

because the doesn't have the courage of his convictions, in allowing legislation to the floor of the Senate for debate and vote.

McConnell is afraid of democracy in the Senate.

Bernie stated that McConnell could vote for the legislation or against it but to at least have the courage to debate the issues in front of the American People and allow a vote.

McConnell hasn't done it because he's afraid of the political consequences, he knows that he's on the wrong side of the issues.

McConnell is a coward.

go against his donors to work for the people who elected him. Hr hides rather than face the electorate and the press. He's afraid of losing his power and seat and being exposed for the corrupt POS he is. He's a low life yellow belly coward. And a traitor.
