It's an iron fact that a vote cast with gusto counts no more than a vote made with detachment. Furthermore, a 23-year-old's vote punches at no greater weight than a 73-year-old's.
So why do so many alleged pros fixate on superficial measurements of the Democrats' support? Here's a theory:
Most of the political media no longer have time for deep reporting. Rallies thus become the go-to events -- as well as cheer levels at debates -- used to assess how a campaign's going. Kamala Harris enjoyed a temporary surge after she aggressively and unfairly attacked Biden for being racially asleep. It was the excitement she stirred that prompted much of the liberal commentariat to immediately declare her winner of the debate and a fast-rising star. Polls now show Biden ahead of Harris by 20 points or more.
The correspondents tend to cluster on the coasts, where activists also dwell and have their ear. Activists are active. If there's an article on Warren or Sanders, note how many of the comments obviously come from their fan bases, if not the campaigns themselves.
Also remarkable is that almost all the talk about the enthusiasm for Warren ignores the considerable lack of enthusiasm for her among African Americans in the Southern states. Sanders does just a little better. White liberals in Iowa and New Hampshire are the voices that dominate. Wonder why.

(24,412 posts)but I'll enthusiastically vote for Biden if he's the nominee. I think that what some people are concerned about is that nominating somebody who younger people are "unenthusiastic" about will drive down voter turnout, especially among younger people. However, I think that it it's a shortsighted argument and, hopefully, everybody on the Democratic side can "see the forest for the trees" long enough to go cast a vote for Biden if he's the nominee so we can get rid of Trump. Whatever Biden's shortcomings are, they're NOTHING compared to Trump's and he will assuredly run a much better and humane government than Trump ever will.

(85,992 posts)...it revealed a weakness in commitment to his presidential bid.
A lot of that rift came from the important constituency of black voters, and highlighted that vulnerability with a sharp drop-off in support, however fleeting.
As more voters tune into the election, beyond dedicated political watchers and party regulars, voter scrutiny will increase, and voters' desire for someone new (reflected in our persistently large field of candidates) will challenge Biden's lead in these early polls.

(8,745 posts)To balance the ticket. Doesn't seem like the enthusiasm ran very deep back then.
Obama shot down advisors who wanted a true partner as Veep, including a unity ticket with rival Clinton.
Here's a quote from a NYTimes article from back in the day explaining it:
"The choice by Mr. Obama in some ways mirrors the choice by Mr. Bush of Dick Cheney as his running mate in 2000; at his age, it appears unlikely that Mr. Biden would be in a position to run for president should Mr. Obama win and serve two terms. Shorn of any remaining ambition to run for president on his own, he could find himself in a less complex political relationship with Mr. Obama than most vice presidents have with their presidents."

But the Left needs to learn to vote like it's their duty and not need to be enthused and excited and motivated like little children.
