No true Scotsman, or appeal to purity, is an informal fallacy in which one attempts to protect a universal generalization from counterexamples by changing the definition in an ad hoc fashion to exclude the counterexample.[1][2] Rather than denying the counterexample or rejecting the original claim, this fallacy modifies the subject of the assertion to exclude the specific case or others like it by rhetoric, without reference to any specific objective rule ("no true Scotsman would do such a thing"; i.e., those who perform that action are not part of our group and thus criticism of that action is not criticism of the group).[3]

(49,825 posts)Informal fallacy
In contrast to a formal fallacy, an informal fallacy originates in a reasoning error other than a flaw in the logical form of the argument.[5] A deductive argument containing an informal fallacy may be formally valid,[6] but still remain rationally unpersuasive. Nevertheless, informal fallacies apply to both deductive and non-deductive arguments.
Though the form of the argument may be relevant, fallacies of this type are the "types of mistakes in reasoning that arise from the mishandling of the content of the propositions constituting the argument".[24]

(8,144 posts)were non-whites, but because they were Jews. In fact, those Jews who immigrated from Europe to
slave-holding states pre-holocaust did own slaves, a paradox noted in research.
I am only making a distinction that for some groups is a consequential one. In its nature, of course, whether racial, ethic, or religious, mass persecution stems from similar causes and has similar effects.

(4,558 posts)Jared Polis will make an EXCELLENT option that I could proudly vote for, canvass for, donate to for President. Would also be a first for GLBT as well.
Nancy Wyman would also make an excellent choice that I could totally get behind, and shed also break the glass ceiling for women.
Hell having any candidate that breaks the long standing Christian mold would be nice imo.
but no. Not BS. Any of our candidates but him please.
