Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBiden/Warren what are the odds?
Long way to go but it looks like it will eventually come down to these two. Now assuming Warren doesn't run away with it, I give it 75/25 Biden picks Warren as the VP. It would be smart politics. If Warren, I think she needs to pick a military/foreign policy expert. Any thought on that?

Beto does take care of a lot of perceived faults of Biden. Like youth, geographics as comes from the south and ability to speak to intersectionals.

There was a lot of talk last spring that Stacey Abrams might be his running mate, and that might be announced early, but they both denied that rumor. And Abrams was considering entering the presidential race herself then.
More recently, though, Abrams has sounded as if she's open to become the nominee's running mate.

That's the standard I'm using to determine if they are serious about having a diverse ticket.

(2,461 posts)Sanders has foreign policy. He is one of the most recognizable political figures internationally. He's part of an international coalition with Varoufakis.
The enemy is within. The military isn't designed to bomb ideas. That hasn't worked out so good.
Initiatives like this is why the Vatican invited Sanders to talk about economic inequality as a global issue.
Here ya go!

(1,602 posts)VP choices aren't always based on whether two people get along well - they are usually focused on whether the VP will bring in a portion of the electorate that the President won't. For Biden, I'd say that it will likely end up being a woman, and if you're assuming its one of the other contenders, then Warren, Harris and potentially Klobuchar are all in the running. I think a Biden/Harris ticket in that case would be more likely, especially if Harris continues polling around 5%, but it is possible that Biden could go with Warren to pick up the more progressive wing (and noting that for all that Biden is portrayed as a moderate here, he's still more liberal than Clinton was when she started campaigning in 2016), so I think we need to be realistic about what that means.
Biden is not a strong debater. I'm not sure that matters in this election. He's been canny enough not to appear to be too much on the attack during the debates, and he's a much more eloquent speaker when he's playing to a crowd. What's more, if he wins, he almost certainly WON'T be running again in 2024, which means that the choice of VP has more significance this time around than in 2016. Note also that Clinton made a major strategic error in Tim Kaine by choosing someone who was mostly unknown outside the DC area, which did little to ignite her base.
Also keep in mind that we still may be looking at the next administration, assuming a Biden Presidency: Warren as Sec Treasury, Harris as Attorney General, Inslee as Sec Interior, possibly Klobuchar as Sec Defense. I don't see any clear Sec State candidate or National Security Advisor, but that's not really the point. You can see where people would easily slot into certain positions.
I still like Warren, and will readily vote for her, but if Biden maintains a consistent lead as he has, I won't be too upset pulling that lever.

(31,261 posts)We have plenty of experts like Lisa Monaco that can lead departments and give advice to a President and Vice President. We just need the two top officers to be competent, inquisitive people who take that advice and craft effective policy.
We need a Vice President choice that can excite the democratic base. The person best positioned for that seems to be Harris.
I think the nomination will come down to Biden or Warren. Neither will be the other's VP choice.

(47,418 posts)they are my two favorite candidates. In my dreams, I see them as a ticket. Back in 2015-16 when Joe was still on the fence about running, it was rumored that he was courting Warren as a possible VP pick.

(10,721 posts)There's no way Warren would give up a Senate seat to be VP to someone with whom she disagrees on economic/financial matters.
I don't think either of them will be the nominee.

(5,443 posts)Biden would probably do better in the rust belt, due to being a native son. He might decide he wants to retire near the end of his term, making Elizabeth Warren President. Note that Teddy Roosevelt, Warren's hero, would likely never have become President, had he not been picked as VP, because he was considered too radical by the GOP of his day.

And, how often do Presidential candidates pick their competitors for VP? Usually, it's someone we never thought of and who won't be tempted to use the office as a springboard for another run.
