Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy I Like Joe Biden for President
I want to beat Trump. Period. I want the best chance to beat this no good motherfucker. I know it's early, but every head to head poll has Biden beating Trump, especially in the all important states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. And the wins are double digit.
Now, there are those of you here who will say that the numbers will change. As the lesser known candidates get better known, they will appear stronger against Trump than Biden. If that day comes, I'll change my mind, but right now, Biden's poll numbers confirm my instincts.
You see, I think we need to pull about 5% of the blue collar white vote from Trump to beat him. If all the other numbers remain at their usual historic levels (young voters, African-Americans, Latinos, etc.) we win. I believe with Biden, we don't need historic turnout to win. If we do get those historic numbers from our base, it will be a landslide win. That's why I'm hoping Biden is the nominee and that he chooses Kamala Harris as his VP. She is a highly qualified candidate who will energize our base. She balances the ticket in such a way that Biden-Harris will, in my opinion, carry every one of the states Hillary carried in 2016, as well as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In addition, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Iowa and maybe even Ohio will be in play. Winning two or three of these states, in addition to the ones mentioned, and we could win in a landslide.
You see, when others refer to Trump as Hitler or Mussolini, they may be using hyperbole. I'm not. Trump, as a 4 year lame duck President with a mandate could be just as dangerous to our democracy as those two evil men were to theirs.
So, winning means everything to me in this election. And I'm not kidding.

(6,228 posts)Biden will not slink around. He will give it back to trump when trump says his crazy stuff. Biden will win the blue collar workers who have been lied to by trump. All I care about is beating trump. I do not think O'Rourke would be the best candidate to run with Biden. We need a woman on the ticket. Biden/Harris would be a formidable ticket. As I've been saying all along, it's not who I like or who you like. It's who can beat trump. Biden can.

But it's time for a woman. It's about 50 years past time for a woman.
No men this time. Men have had 200+ years of running this country.
Time for a break.

(12,265 posts)Part of that is because I think it will take a ton of experience to fix what 45 has destroyed. I also think Biden can bring some sanity back to the office. I want him to pick a young gun as VP if he is the candidate, and my preference would be he would be a one term President due to his age.
It has been so stressful since 2016 that I think the country as a whole is tired. Even the people I know who support the orange wonder are getting tired, but for different reasons. I think the fatigue factor will be heavy with this election.
As I have said there are only a couple of these candidates that I don't care for, but no matter who the candidate is, I will work my butt off to get them elected. I will not ignore the state and local elections either. 2020 is a census year, remember that, the state lawmakers will be in charge of drawing the districts.

Joe.. will be looking at a four year stint in the white house.. and handing off .. sort of what Speaker Pelsoi did.. these older Pols.. including Bernie.. are willing to step in ..because we have had such a tear down of our government..

But we need to strive higher this trip, and there are better, younger candidates. Jay Inslee (68) is the upper limit age-wise of the candidates. How about a Kamala Harris/Pete Buttigieg ticket?

(8,652 posts)...I'm 66 years old and I find that offensive, as you would if gender or race was used for opposition.
That's all I'm saying. Age is as a protected class in the workplace as religion, race, gender, national origin, disability, etc.
That's what I'm pointing out. If you want to criticize Biden for policy proposals or past positions, I have no quarrel. That's politics. But to be against a candidate for his age is a bigoted position.
Please re-read my response. It bashed nobody except the poster who said Joe is too old. Again, that's offensive.

(14,565 posts)Specifics like faraway poll numbers don't impress me nearly as much as properly applied big picture generalities. Biden may poll well now but he has run multiple times previously. The factors that led to his also-ran status in those cycles are almost guaranteed to show up again. The trusted grandfather role is incredibly fragile. By far our worst scenario is for Biden to survive the primaries without the old flaws surfacing, but then they steadily attach to his general election bid.
I like Joe Biden immensely. I don't like late blooming stiffs. That may be a harsh term it is not aimed at Joe Biden. It is overall philosophy. I have used it for more than 30 years in regard to athletes who suddenly are deemed more special than anything in their life/career has suggested previously. Biden obviously was a young breakthrough as senator. For whatever reason that was his ceiling. I don't think we should kid ourselves that a higher level is suddenly available for him. That might have been true in late 2017 with Trump at 35-38% approval. It does not apply to late in an incumbent's first term when benefit of a doubt has slowly aligned, especially if economic indications are positive.
Joe Biden does not fit the blueprint I look for toward ousting an incumbent. I make no apologies about that. We need young and charismatic. IMO, nominating Joe Biden would be like my Miami Dolphins drafting Ryan Tannehill 7 years ago, while ignoring everything on his resume that signaled late blooming stiff.

(816 posts)...Orange Fuhrer is now a known quantity. He won't be able to destabilize the debates with his b.s. It will not go unanswered this time. None of the candidates will stand for his constant insults and berating the moderators. They won't go to his level, but I believe they will defend themselves vigorously. Some of the candidates will be able to handle him with ease. My top three are Biden, Harris and O'Rourke. In that order. They seem to be able to cut through the petty garbage that will be hurled at them. They have plenty of prep time.

(3,322 posts)The Country and the World needs Biden and his experience after the Trump catastrophe, but would also be very supportive of Biden for SOS for the same reasons in a Harris/Beto or Buttegeig with Biden SOS ticket. Add Inslee as EPA Secretary, Warren at Treasury, Bullock at Interior, Castro at Labor, Klochabar at AG, and you have a super power ticket.

(10,828 posts)With good reason, I believe. Biden has the seasoned hand, the knowledge and knows how DC works, inside and out. Plus, he's the only candidate with foreign policy chops. And he is a scrapper. I have little doubt that he could put the Trumpster on his back in the GE.
However, he does have questions he'll need to answer, positions to defend. How effectively he answers/responds to those dangling questions will determine how he fares as we go down the road.
So right now? Biden is leading the pack. Without even declaring (haha). However, a lot of things can happen because politics (like life) is unpredictable.
Which is why I remain sitting in the undecided corner.

(220 posts)a bigger margin of victory (and maybe raise a lot of money). But many of the DU members overlook what happens after the victory. Biden will have a wealth of choices from which to make appointments in his administration. I think Kamala Harris would make a GREAT AJ. She worked in the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2004, she was elected District attorney of San Francisco. Harris was narrowly elected as California's Attorney General in 2010 and was reelected in 2014 by a wide margin. And she would be in a good position to run for President in 2024. Biden has said he would only seek one term.
I think Warren or Bernie would be good Sec. of State. Both are well known and respected by world leaders, have some foreign policy experience and neither would be afraid to stand up to autocratic regimes. Either one would have the good sense to keep us out of war.
Klochabar, Stacy Abrams, Buttegeig, Inslee, Booker and Castro would likely be offered cabinet positions or other high offices. Joe would be a mentor to all of them, teaching them more about governing. Some more will probably enter the race and some in that crowded field will certainly rise to the top becoming shining stars. Working under Biden, known for being a team player, would certainly teach them all a lot. It is an opportunity that could benefit the Democratic Party for years to come.
I would like to see some non candidates appointed to different offices. Though it is not likely that DU member would agree with me I would like to see a couple of Republicans, John Kennedy, Senator from Louisiana and John Kasich, former Governor of Ohio. They are not Tea Party Republicans, both have stood up to Trump at times and seem to have some common sense. Bringing them into the fold would go a long way in healing divisions in our country.

About 8% to 12% of the voters are persuadable. I believe they are inclined to vote against Trump. However, I want to spend my time convincing them to vote against Trump, not explaining to this type of voter, who I consider ill informed and disengaged, about Socialism. There may be a time in the future when Democratic Socialism can be debated. However, this election this too important. The fate of the Republic is at stake. We can't leave anything to chance.
