Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumA wake-up call for Democrats
Electability is not defined by race or gender. Barack Obama won the presidency. Dozens of women won House seats in swing districts in 2018. This does not mean that all candidates are equally electable. Some are too ideologically extreme; others do not connect emotionally with voters. Simply put, there are good candidates and poor ones, and President Trump is not so unpopular that Democrats have the luxury of nominating a poor one.
[Even a year in advance, that should be a sobering reminder that Warren is a much bigger risk for Democrats (and the survival of our democracy) than is Biden. There may be candidates who could, if they managed to rise to the top of the Democratic polls and win nomination, be as competitive as Biden, but Warren and Sanders fail to attract a chunk of voters that Biden grabs, and by the way they are campaigning, they are unlikely to remedy that deficit.]
[Who supports Biden but not Warren? Nearly three-quarters of such voters say that they would prefer a Democrat who promises to find common ground with Republicans over one who promises to fight for a bold progressive agenda. Of voters who support Mr. Biden but not Ms. Warren, 52 percent agree with the statement that Ms. Warren is too far to the left for them to feel comfortable supporting her for president, while 26 percent disagree.]

(68,552 posts)election...or risk the Republic. Yes it is that serious. Trump is very dangerous....and I don't give two fucks who runs as long as they can beat Trump. I support Biden because I like (but I like all our candidates) him and believe he can beat Trump.

(8,677 posts)But if the Democratic nominee is too far left like Warren they will feel they have no choice. With Biden I believe we get those voters.

(8,677 posts)I was thinking you meant go big with big liberal ideas. I think that would be a mistake. We need a more centrist approach to ensure we win. IMHO.

(24,726 posts)Initially in 2016.
I do feel I am starting to see clearly now that Biden has broader appeal. We could do worse, and we must take back the WH or America is forever lost, I believe.
I do not believe any of our present slate will dismiss out of hand the ideas and input of the others once elected.
I hope he gets good advice on his VP choice. Stacy Abrams presently for me.

(10,828 posts)This is not an ordinary election. It's all about who can defeat Donald Trump, repudiate him and his enablers who would turn the country into their own corrupt and cruel fiefdom. In order to do that we need the candidate who has the broadest appeal and reach, who can amass the biggest share of votes in the states that count for an electoral college victory.
We cannot let this slip away. Not if we want a future. It's really that critical.
As for Stacey Abrams for VP? I'd be thrilled by that choice.

(8,144 posts)continue to be the candidate with the broadest appeal and the best chances to beat Trump.
However, a more moderate candidate would not spell the end for the progressive agenda. It was both events and outside agitation that moved FDR. In our case, the progressive wing will influence the Dem party platform
from the git go, and continue as a power from within and outside no matter the nominee.
I dont personally endorse the whole agenda, but I recognize the tremendous affect progressive candidates and their movement are having not only on Democrats, but the country.

(3,363 posts)Emerson poll has all 3 top candidates beating Trump in Michigan. Sanders wins by more than Biden.
We all thought Hillary would win in 2016 because she was the safe, moderate candidate.

(2,536 posts)After losing RFK, McCarthy not winning, and the Dem convention riots, Humphrey was left hanging in the wind. Foolish pride on the antiwar activists part made the war last years longer than it needed to.
There will be no change if Trump wins.

(3,363 posts)Republicans have proven themselves to be an organized crime syndicate. The entire party belongs in prison.
If that's the best we can do, then I support the end of the United States and we need to just split into 2 or 3 countries.
