Warren bets the White House on Medicare for All

Axios

Elizabeth Warren, who rose to the top with big liberal bets, is banking a big slice of her presidential run on full-throated support for Medicare for All.

Why it matters: Warren is taking a beating on social media after claiming middle class Americans won’t pay higher taxes to fund health care coverage fully paid for by taxpayers, according to data from NewsWhip provided exclusively to Axios. At the same time, her poll numbers nationally are slipping.

The bigger picture: Numerous prominent Democrats have told us Trump will feast on Warren’s plan to eliminate private insurance to force everyone onto Medicare. They worry she has no wiggle room to backtrack if she wins the nomination because her entire reputation is wrapped around not buckling on big debates like health care.

By the numbers: Of the 50 biggest stories over the last two weeks about Elizabeth Warren's plan to pay for Medicare for All, 70% were negative, according to NewsWhip data.

Cuz she’ll rock their world, that’s both sides and the middle. She is going for a systems change that’s badly needed.

11. Barring other info about the poll, I'd assume that poll is one that was so vague in its questions

that respondents would have confused "Medicare For All" meaning no private insurance (which is not that popular) with "Medicare for All Who Want It" or the public option, which is VERY popular.

Every poll I've seen that spells out the differences between MFA and the public option has found the public option much more popular.

And the survey question was "Would you support or oppose to providing Medicare to every American?" It wasn't a question about MfA as it is outlined in Bernie's legislation or Warren's proposal. It was a question about Medicare as it currently exists, i.e. public option, not a single payer system.

I live in rural northern Michigan that voted heavily for trump. My neighbors all did and now they regret their choice and in some weird way are enamored by Warren except for M4A. Why? They really didn’t understand. We had a little get together and explained it in easy terms, their minds changed, maybe just a little right now but said ok if that’s what it’s about I’ll entertain the thought.

to remove Trump and may we lose the house as well...she has my vote and other Democrats as well for sure, but this is not a base election....we need votes in three rust belt states.

3. It makes me uneasy

I have Medicare part A. I've used it only once since I signed up 11 years ago. I also pay for Blue Cross Blue Shield, which I use for doctor's appointments and prescriptions. I am eligible for care through VA, and have used it for surgeries three times, at the John Cochran Medical Center in St. Louis. (I am happy with the care I've received through VA, by the way.) I have had some referrals from VA to private medical providers located nearer to where I live, most recently for physical therapy.

I am generally satisfied with my health care coverage. Medicare for All might be as good, perhaps even better. I am uneasy about it because I don't know if it will be better and I don't know what it will wind up costing me. I imagine there is some co-pay and/or co-insurance involved.

I honestly do not know if I want M4A. I think I want to use the coverage I have, but take a wait-and-see approach to mandatory Medicare.

The biggest negative of M4A is it eliminates choice.

It’s supporters are uncaring what the rest of Americans want. They are willing to risk 4 more years of trump for something that isn’t even defined yet.

They will point to Bernie’s “bill” and call it the definition of M4A when he disagrees with Warren.

The greatest threat to us having trump re-elected is M4A.

Bernie and Elizabeth start pushing this Medicare For All to fuck up our chances. Why push all this controversial shit during a very important election. Why take a chance of pissing off the people in PA, WI and Michigan? They are really starting to piss me off. I expected it from Bernie becausehe isall about Bernie. Bernie or Bust and all of that. Really upset that Elizabeth won’t budge on this issue. She will not even allow people to have an option to keep their insurance. If one of them causes us to lose this election based on their bullshit about Medicare for all I’m gonna be pissed. We are taking a chance on five more years with this traitor.
