Pete Buttigieg unveils $1 trillion plan for affordable housing and child care — and says how he’d lower the cost of college

"Democratic presidential contender Pete Buttigieg unveiled plans on Friday to invest more than $1 trillion in child care and affordable housing over the next decade as part of a package of proposals targeting the middle class.

The South Bend, Indiana, mayor also provided more details on how he would lower the cost of college, saying that he would eliminate tuition at public colleges for families earning less than $100,000 and reduce costs for those earning up to $150,000. Historically black colleges and universities will receive $50 billion under his administration.

“As president, I will measure success not just by the size of the stock market or gross domestic product, but by whether working and middle class families are succeeding,” Buttigieg said in the plan. “I will use public enforcement, public investments, and public options to make the economy deliver for all Americans, not just those at the top.”

1. In any other election cycle, these would be lauded as progressive, forward-leaning...

....proposals. But, for some reason, they'll be labeled as too centrist and not progressive enough.

2. On the other hand, how wonderful that policies this progressive are now seen as centrist.

It's true that he's not the most progressive candidate this campaign season, but I'm very happy that policies that would have been seen as radically progressive just a few years ago are now seen as centrist.

But you're right: the downside is that in some circles he's being derided as too centrist.
Unfortunately we seem hardwired to label our candidates, and then be for or against them based on those labels, instead of recognizing how much they have in common.

3. Very good point. I would be super happy to support Mayor Pete should he emerge...

...as the candidate. My support for Liz is 110% pragmatic in that I think she has the best chance to beat Trump in a General. If Mayor Pete can overcome his issues with African-American voters, he would likely lap the field. Dude is super impressive. Plus, he learned a freaking language just so he could read a book??!! Who does that? 45 doesn't even read!!!!

Love them both for different reasons--and they are both intellectual giants.

(And yeah, learning a language to read a book is what sparked my excitement for Mayor Pete.)

6. superb plans and goals, and I agree with other posters, it is madness that Buttigieg is seen by some

as a centrist. The far left has set up a bar of measurement that is simply neither an electable platform nor passable in our Congress, which is the result of our artificially right-shifted electoral national map.
