Beto to supporters: 'All of us have to commit to get behind the nominee from this party'

Beto O'Rourke — just a week after ending his presidential campaign — encouraged supporters on Thursday to get behind the future Democratic nominee.

The former El Paso congressman held a final "huddle with the team" Thursday evening where, true to form, he used a live streamed video to thank supporters and close the chapter on his presidential bid.

"All of us have to commit to get behind the nominee from this party to make sure that she or he is successful against Donald Trump," O'Rourke said on the Thursday call.

"And then to make sure that once they become president that they help to heal this very divided country and face with courage every single one of the challenges in front of us right now."

But this never ending primary season with no elections is wearing me out. So many candidates. Couldn't a few of them have self-selected to run for something else? With so many running they may have drained valuable resources from the future nominee. Could we make a law that no one can announce until 10 months before the election? That's plenty of time for people to be running. Including the shitstain incumbent. Make it they can't raise funds until 12 months before the election. I remember when people announced the week after Christmas and New Hampshire's primary was in March to start everything off. Go ahead call me old timer. I decide a couple weeks before my states primary or decide when I get out of my car and start walking toward the poll door like I did in 2008. Of course I have always supported the nominee and who wouldn't this time since the opponent is raw naked fascism?

resources being wasted if they bring vital policy issues to the forefront. However, I do believe that every one of the Democratic candidates should commit to releasing email and donor lists to our eventual nominee with seven days after the conclusion of the national convention. We need for all of our candidates to be team players.

ETA: I also agree that the kickoff of the primary season should be moved to July 1 since we seem to be in a perpetual campaign mode. It would also allow candidates like Bullock to get more traction since he was faithful in serving his role as governor while the legislature was in session. We shouldn't penalize politicians for doing the jobs they were elected for.

I firmly believe that the easiest to win the general election in 2020 was to win just one state which we didn't take in 2016. I also believe that Beto would be a great president continuing the line of great Democratic presidents over the past century.

And I believe that Beto showed progressive bona fides with his policies on issues such as gun control, immigration and reparations. Beto was further to the left than some of the candidates that are described as progressives.

I don't own a gun, but if I were married and had a family, I likely would own one for the home. I believe valid issues with guns is mandating that people that own them maintain control of them at all times, that means secure gun safes in the home so that kids can't get to the gun, training classes on gun safety taught by non-zealots (NRA zombies), screening of gun ownership applicants for past mental health issues or scares -on the mental health part, I would even add a check on any relative who would routinely be near the gun in a home, and required registration of the gun. I would even go as far as requiring that a person sit for an interview with local police before final approval to buy a gun is granted. Beto stepped back on assault weapons and said that he would allow them at gun ranges, that was a move that I have doubts about, the Sandy Hook shooter became a better marksman because his mom (who he killed first) took him to a gun range to shoot assault weapons.

self-defense, hunting, or if necessary protecting oneself from wild animals. However, I can't rationalize the need for the average citizen to have semi-automatic assault weapons. The fact that the Sandy Hook shooter murdered his mother and his marksmanship improved because he went to a gun range reinforces that point.

I agree with the rest of your points about gun safety issues, screening applicants, and required registrations. I didn't agree with Beto backtracking on allowing people to have assault weapons at gun ranges. He shouldn't have responded to the questions about assault weapons at gun ranges because it did make him appear wishy-washy.

the military. The issue is given how deeply they have penetrated into some parts of our society, how can we best remove them. Like you, I have come to believe that assault weapons at gun ranges is a bad idea, I used to feel differently until I remembered some of the details that were published about the Sandy Hook murderer. Putting assault weapons at gun ranges will only make potential killers more efficient at killing unless a lot of other checks and constraints are done and applied.

Joe Biden
