(9,228 posts)Insisting on an unachievable agenda in the face of losing the majority of Americans to Trump is the opposite of uniting.
It's better for the millenials to facilitate, not to oppose what is achievable. This is what Biden calls "uniting".

(15,544 posts)Fighting for what is conceivable gives us a fighting chance to achieve more than thought possible.
"Achievable" is such a subjective term, defined only by the intensity of the individual's fear-based defeatism.
Democrats should not vote with their amygdala's - leave that to the republicans.

(9,228 posts)This kind of focus gets the likes of Trump into the Oval Office. I am not principled enough to step into the same pile of crap twice. Besides, it will not advance your principles one single bit.

(31,106 posts)take a chance that 51% of the country wants what will be called RADICAL change now?
sigh
I was for M4All before most here could say it let alone know what it is, but NOW is not the time.
I dont call it M4All I call it universal healthcare, but that isnt important now, what IS important is the murderous dictator supporting our president who has supported the MURDER of journalists and Ukrainians
How bout we REMOVE that shit first?
Dont answer, I know what you will say.

(25,423 posts)particularly a group that votes at roughly half the rate of groups like 65+ voters, is a surefire way to lose in 2020.
It's not all about millennials, and not all millennials are alike. Generic assertions about "status quo" and "substantive change" don't really accomplish anything. Besides, no one in the race on the Democratic side is opposing "substantive change", in a general sense. The difference between the status quo and the stances on the issues by any of our candidates is night and day.
We need to appeal across the spectrum if we're going to win in 2020. Similar strategy to the 2018 midterms, where we made gains in numerous areas but most notably with independents.

(8,144 posts)education, age, ethnicity, and race. Only Sanders has substantial younger voter support, but of all groups, younger voters are the least reliable.
Still, Joes sound and doable plans will prove attractive as progressive candidates meet reality testing from press, public, and other candidates.
Just as Bernie and Warren reach out for more AA support, so will Joes campaign work on the youth vote, where his experience in gun control legislation will matter. But it is AA voters who are the most reliable and crucial to our base.

(58,785 posts)the party, from people who have no intention of voting for any Democrat and are trying to mindfuck others into not also.
Polling of our vastly diverse reliable Democratic voters shows Biden's either first or second choice for the vast majority. And that majority is a reflection of America that ranges across all colors, religions, ethnicities, ages, and educational and income levels. This is wonderful, Fiendish! We're literally the party of "the people."
As for our young Dems, those who vote tend to be smarter and more serious than those who don't. Is that any surprise? Shouldn't be. And smart Democrats know we have to stop what's happening on the right before it destroys us and also that only taking meaningful action that counts will achieve what we want.

(15,544 posts)Because, by and large, they don't want Biden. That doesn't mean they are outside the party, it means that Biden's role as a party insider doesn't inspire them. If we nominate a candidate who will inspire massive turnout, especially among young voters, then WE WILL WIN.
Of course, there are other outside forces bashing Biden in an effort to weaken his candidacy, not because they don't want him to be the nominee, but because they expect him to be the nominee - that's why Trump immersed himself in this Ukraine quagmire.

(58,785 posts)are pushing. To the extent it's true, the notion that large numbers of young people are "uninspired" by most of our candidates is far less relevant than you're being deluded into believing.
Our nominees are always consensus choices of millions of people of all ages. How could it ever be otherwise?
There are only two types of young Democrats/Dem leaners: those who will be voting on November 3, 2020 and those who won't.
Those who will vote are either already self driven or newly responding to the call of duty. They'll vote for whoever our candidate is, and most will get great satisfaction from taking a stand in this great battle.
As for those who won't vote, yes they do include some who've been successfully deceived into believing they're owed an exciting candidate who woos and inspires them. But all of them won't bother to vote because the problem is within them. They haven't learned to care enough or to be responsible enough to do their duty, and frankly some of them never will. There are sadly all too many of their sort in all age groups.

(3,137 posts)...is too polarized to 'unite' anytime soon...
...we need to concentrate on maintaining a very strong Progressive base within the Party and then cultivate the independent middle with appealing Progressive problem-solving policies...
...in other words, do what trump did with the republicans and capture the independents...and make it all taste better...
...explain how we would ever be able to unite over a wide range of issues with today's republican party?
...impossible...

Or do you mean the ones that don't believe in climate change?
Or do you mean the ones who want to impose their version of morality on women?
Or do you mean the ones that talk to God and God wants to install a christiofascist nation state?
These people don't believe in any sort of reality and they are ready to shred every institution in this country to further their disillusion.
We don't need a unifier we need a realist. We need the next pres to get shit done and ignore the crazies. Time is running out and wasting it pandering to crazies is going to ensure it does.

(8,144 posts)chief cheerleader.
He has continued to sound a theme that is in complete opposition to those who attempt to shred every institution that protects our democratic ideals. No one in this party who talks unity is talking about alliances with the dark side:
Days before the mid-terms, Biden said of Trump, he fomented fears of a caravan heading to the United States, creating hysteria. saying look at what is marching up, that is an invasion
An invasion. The Democratic front-runner continued through a litany of examples of Trump hurling red meat to his supporters. At a rally in Florida, when he asked a crowd, How do we stop these people?, meaning immigrants, and someone yelled back, Shoot them. He smiled, Biden recounted. And then Biden drew a straight line from Trumps embrace of white supremacy to the hate-inspired violence weve endured.
How far is it from Trumps saying this is an invasion to the shooter in El Paso declaring, quote, this attack is in response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas? How far apart are those comments?
How far is it from white supremacists and Neo-Nazis in Charlottesville -- Trumps very fine people -- chanting You will [not] replace us to the shooter at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh saying, we're committing genocide" -- Jews are committing genocide -- on his people. I don't think it's that far at all.
Its both clear language and in code, this president has fanned the flames of white supremacy in this nation.

(2,768 posts)There are no excuses, reasons or anything else for this. I like Biden and if hes our nominee I hope he doesn't waste his time trying to make good on trying to unify with people who clearly hate me and would rather burn the country down than see me succeed through education and hard work. I don't want Biden to waste his time trying to placate people who don't want to compromise. The only thing they wan't is 100% not compatible with any of our goals. Not only do they hate me but they hate everybody on our side for not being as horrid as they are.

Snip Biden speech quoted in Capeharts WaPo op-Ed cited last post:
What this president doesnt understand is that unlike every other nation on earth, we're unable to define what constitutes "American" by religion, by ethnicity, or by tribe; you can't do it.
America is an idea. An idea stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant. It gives hope to the most desperate people on earth
.
The most powerful idea in the history of the world I think beats in the hearts of the people of this country. And it beats in all of us. No matter your race, your ethnicity. No matter your gender identity, your sexual orientation. No matter your faith. It beats in the heart of rich and poor alike. It unites America -- whether your ancestors were Native to these shores or they were brought here forcibly and enslaved, whether they were immigrants generations back, like my family from Ireland, or those coming today looking to build a better life for your family.
The American creed that we are all created equal was written long-ago. But the genius of every generation of Americans has opened it wider and wider and wider, to include those who have been excluded in a previous generation. Thats why it has never gathered dust in the history books.
Biden wasnt blind to the shortcomings of our nation and the men who formed it. He talked about them. But he demonstrated that the vision of America was perpetuated by Democratic and Republican presidents alike throughout its history.
Unifying around this idea of America is what all of us are talking about. Not Bidens original idea, but
THAT America, not MAGHAT land.
