**UPDATE** @PeteButtigieg: "The failures of the Obama era help explain how we got Trump."

Buttigieg chafes at comparisons to Biden and Bloomberg.

“My message is not about going back to where we were,” he said. “The failures of the Obama era help explain how we got Trump. I am running on building a future that is going to have a lot of differences.… One thing I learned in 2016 is to be very skeptical of any message that relies on the word ‘again.’ ”

Update: from Evan Halper

My story about
@PeteButtigieg
ends with him referring to the “failures of the Obama era.” That’s an inaccurate quote — the result of transcribing a noisy recording at a loud rally. His exact words were “failures of the old normal”

He's come across as a little too arrogant early on, if you've been paying attention to this board since a few months ago that is. Over past few months he got better, but now it's back to his smug ways. “failures of the old normal” is basically saying the same thing. OLD NORMAL in my mind translates to what was prior to the status quo, which was Obama. Anybody dissing O isn't going to do well.

As a result, Americans' racial identities and racial attitudes became even more potent political forces and helped transform the party coalition. Non-whites increasingly identified as Democrats. Whites -- and particularly whites who did not have a college degree and had less favorable views of racial and ethnic minorities -- increasingly identified as Republicans. The party coalitions became more divided by race and ethnicity after Obama took office and before the 2016 presidential campaign was seriously under way.

"... during the Obama era, whites were leaving the Democratic Party. In Pew Research Center surveys from 2007, whites were just as likely to call themselves Democrats as they were to call themselves Republican. But by 2010, whites were 12 points more likely to be Republicans than Democrats."

under Obama..

8 years of suffering under Barack Obama

The sentence I hear most from well-meaning, conservative friends since President Trump’s election is this: “We suffered 8 years under Barack Obama.”

Fair enough. Let’s take a look.

The day Obama took office, the Dow closed at 7,949 points. Eight years later, the Dow had almost tripled.

General Motors and Chrysler were on the brink of bankruptcy, with Ford not far behind, and their failure, along with their supply chains, would have meant the loss of millions of jobs. Obama pushed through a controversial, $8o billion bailout to save the car industry. The U.S. car industry survived, started making money again, and the entire $80 billion was paid back, with interest.

While we remain vulnerable to lone-wolf attacks, no foreign terrorist organization has successfully executed a mass attack here since 9/11.

Obama ordered the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.

He drew down the number of troops from 180,000 in Iraq and Afghanistan to just 15,000, and increased funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He launched a program called Opening Doors which, since 2010, has led to a 47 percent decline in the number of homeless veterans.

He set a record 73 straight months of private-sector job growth.

Due to Obama’s regulatory policies, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 12%, production of renewable energy more than doubled, and our dependence on foreign oil was cut in half.

He signed The Lilly Ledbetter Act, making it easier for women to sue employers for unequal pay.

His Omnibus Public Lands Management Act designated more than 2 million acres as wilderness, creating thousands of miles of trails and protecting over 1,000 miles of rivers.

He reduced the federal deficit from 9.8 percent of GDP in 2009 to 3.2 percent in 2016.

For all the inadequacies of the Affordable Care Act, we seem to have forgotten that, before the ACA, you could be denied coverage for a pre-existing condition and kids could not stay on their parents’ policies up to age 26.

Obama approved a $14.5 billion system to rebuild the levees in New Orleans.

All this, even as our own Mitch McConnell famously asserted that his singular mission would be to block anything President Obama tried to do.

The failure to get a public option, austerity, not aggressively addressing the housing crisis, and not spending all the stimulus funds are a few of them.

But in this climate baldly blaming Obama is a non-starter.

You're Welcome, emmaverybo.. Thank you for saying that the fact that Obama didn't have the votes for Public Option had nothing to do with bringing us the Psycho in the WH.

Barack Obama was born Black.. that's not a "failure".

97. After Ted Kennedy died there was literally no avenue toward getting a public option.
Mon Nov 11, 2019, 03:39 AM
Nov 2019

The only way to have ANY bill was to have the House pass the already-Senate-passed bill, the one that had passed with Ted Kennedy's vote before he died. No further vote in the Senate was possible because Kennedy was replaced by a Republican and 60 votes were required to get past a filibuster.

The reason the Senate bill didn't contain a public option was because Joe Lieberman, Independent, refused to be one of the 60 votes if the bill included a public option. So the Senate, including Kennedy, passed its bill, and the hope was for the House to pass a bill with the public option. Then the two houses, in a conference committee, would agree on keeping the public option.

But that possibility died with Senator Kennedy.

refusing to support him in 10 and 14...of course the votes were not there and their efforts limited what President Obama could accomplish the rest of the time he held office and there would have been no investigation of Hillary without losing the house ...so I expect in some ways this also helped bring about Trump...imagine if everyone had supported the president in 10 and 14. And whether Mayor Pete said Pres. Obama's name or not the point he was making is pretty much the same.

He didn't say the "failures of Obama", he said the "failures of the Obama era". That could mean what people on here have jumped on him for, or it could mean the repub obstruction of the Obama era, or many other things. His reference in the last sentence to "again" was obviously to the MAGAt message.

Reading the article doesn't really give it any more context. I would like to hear him expound on it before crucifying him.

If I'd only read "the old normal" that would still sound a little strange to me, but the full quote makes sense. He seems to be talking about problems that have been building for decades--and I think most of us agree that the economy hasn't been working for everyone and we're not on track to prevent climate catastrophe.

“I also fundamentally believe that there is no going back. My message is not about going back to where we were. I think because I come from a part of the country where normal has been a real problem for a very long time, and I think the failures of the old normal help explain how we got to Trump, I am much more interested in building a future that is going to have a lot of differences."

I can't even see this as controversial.

I can see that the outrageously sloppy journalist inadvertently filled in “Obama era” as her hasty

She was just typing a million miles an hour not listening to every word she had recorded.

tripped over his own tongue. And Joe Biden is the Gaffe Master???

Or perhaps, Buttigieg has forgotten the financial disaster Obama had to clean up. Without any help from Republicans. In fact, Republicans howled at every turn as the Obama Administration worked to keep the country from diving headlong into another Great Depression. And McConnell telegraphed his greatest concern: making sure Barack Obama was a one-term president. Americans were losing their homes and livelihoods but Republicans were hellbent on political scoring.

I think Mayor Pete needs to review the history; it wasn't that long ago.

As for Donald Trump? He belongs entirely, unequivocally to the Republican Party and all its members who have debased themselves and the country for the sake of power and greed.

If you don't like the word again then don't spew Republican talking points. Or we will once AGAIN have frigging Donald Trump squatting in the White House.

No alluding to past performances, eras, old normals--simply spotlighting and hammering away at repukes, dump et al who specifically caused this greatly incalculable mess of a nightmare.

Nov 2019

There absolutely has to be some self-reflection within the Democratic Party in order to prevent a figure like Trump from rising again. I actually thought we were on the way there in this primary. The quote could easily have been said by Warren and Sanders. And they have said similar things in the past. Obama was a great president but everyone in this country bears some responsibility for allowing Trump to happen. Like Buttigieg says in his stump speech, "if our economy and our democracy were working the way they were supposed to, a guy like this would never have come within cheating distance of the White House in the first place."

If I were to vote in a presidential

I hate to say that I believe there are a lot of people who believed DT's promises, like bringing all those good factory jobs home, stopping immigration so all those jobs they take from YOU will open up. DT is good at picking all the sensitive subjects that bothr a lot of people and promise to fix them. Of course those jobs CAN'T come back because technology eliminated a lot of them, and it's not efficient to build the new modern factories when the finished product is available by importing.

naming Obama...what was Biden in charge then? I don't think so. Why must he and others use Pres. Obama to go after Joe Biden? Talk about what you will do...don't criticize the best Democratic president since Roosevelt or maybe better than Roosevelt because he saved the economy, gave us health care (no other ever came close) and saved the dreamers as well. He did a great deal of good during his term with rabid Republicans nipping at his heels the entire time.

Roosevelt dealt with the aftermath of a failed economy. it was over before he took office...the failing part. But Obama saved our economy from failing despite the GOP best efforts to destroy it. I kept my house thanks to Obama and my husband kept his job in autos thanks to Obama. As far as I am concerned he is the best. My family kept Roosevelt's picture up in our home...he saved my Grandmother's house...and I placed Obama's picture right next to the Roosevelt picture and there it will stay.

I think atm that Biden is probably the surest shot to boot Trump if Pete fails to win. He really needs to have some strong debates though, although he may even overcome that. I support Buttigieg because I think he would make the best POTUS, and I will vote for him in the California primary, but will fully pivot to the winner and try my hardest to get them elected over the monster Rump.

MFA as an election-loser scares the shit out of me. I have no idea why Warren went all in on it. I love much of her agenda, and I would so prefer MFA instead of the current system (at current rates of increase, under the current in-place model, we will spend at least 52.5 trillion USD on healthcare from 2021 to 2020, per the architect of the ACA), but it just will not pass under the current paradigm (I do not think even the Public Option will pass) and it can be used to bash us over the head (especially the 160m people having their health insurance taken away part)in the general.

I don't get how 'failures of the old normal' became 'failures of the Obama era.' I listened to the available audio clip and the 'failures of the old normal' was clear enough even with the background noise. And my hearing sucks.

If this is indeed the right clip then this goes beyond a reporter's error into a reporter's incompetence or deliberate malfeasance during an election season.

That being said, I'd suggest Mayor Pete clarify the statement itself. What exactly is meant by the 'old normal?'

I think Buttigieg would be a fine VP candidate, but I want to see more experience from someone running for President. This kind of mistake only strengthens the disfunctional GOP and reinforces their narrative of sloppy reporting.

I don't know this reporter, but I am wondering how this could be an honest mistake. It is such an explosive quote, I would have verified that I had it right before publishing anything.

The number of knee-jerk responses to the OP (pre- and post-correction) was stunning. It’s hard not to wonder and worry about the implications for 2020. After all we’ve been through since 2016, how can there still be so many in the DU community who are this easily spooked into stampeding over the cliff? An onslaught of deliberate gaslighting and disinformation is coming our way from tRumpster trolls and their Russian puppet masters, and they won’t be apologizing, or correcting their “mistakes.”
