Would it be the responsibility of the employer? Some new moms may not have good full time jobs, so how is that fair? Employers who are small businesses can't afford to pay someone who isn't there and the person they will need to hire temporarily to do the new mom's job.

Or maybe you're thinking it will come out of the new mom's social security or UI benefits?

And while we're talking about new moms, how about the people who have to take time off from work to take care of elderly parents? They should be paid as well.

This is an issue that needs more than "I'll make it happen" as a solution.

At least not in the terms you reference. He couldn't afford Murdochs mother-in-law suite.

Not saying that's a bad thing. It's just a lot of people think Yang is super wealthy.

Tue Nov 12, 2019, 02:22 PM

He proposes that employers should pay for 6 months of leave for a new parent. He has demonstrated an understanding of the pressures on small businesses so although the detailed plan is not up, I fully expect he will account for that in his plan.

Additionally, his UBI program would help stay at home caregivers of children and the elderly. As well as volunteers. Part time workers. Artists. And on and on ...

I know Michael Moore doesn't have the most sterling reputation around here, but this clip from Sicko is worth watching. Informative and maddening. I'm sure you've seen this, but for those who haven't...
