(13,570 posts)lost very many votes staying silent on that issue. There are bound to be a few single issue weed voters that insist on a legalization candidate, but not many. Anyone with the over my dead body attitude on weed wasn't voting for our side anyway.

This is why it's important to support candidates in the primary with a clue.

(3,022 posts)"how was marijuana a gateway for stonecutter357" only gets 6 hits, one of them is this posting, and the others don't mention stonecutter357. I don't think the Internet knows why marijuana was a gateway for you.

(3,764 posts)the fact that once people find out that the government lied about marijuana they are not inclined to believe any other facts about drugs that the government is trying to shove down their throats.
That and the fact that once they start hanging out with drug users they are likely to meet people who take other drugs.

Out of touch!... Disqualifying!... His poll numbers steady as a rock!... Wait, how could this be? But...But... he lost a lot of people as soon as he said this, no?
Fact is, Biden's personal views on marijuana, as well as abortion, had been well known for years. Doesn't seem to reflect on his popularity, or his ability to set his personal preferences aside in pursuit of the Democratic agenda. Didn't budge his poll numbers one bit. Perhaps because most Democrats don't consider his position so awfully contemptible, or they don't want to blow the issue out of all proportion, or their outrage is not so easily triggered, or, god forbid, they agree that additional research into the issue is a very reasonable step to take before considering legislation!

(9,305 posts)And GOP's war on drugs doesn't?
Show me anything in Biden's statements that he intends to keep "three strikes and you re out" on the books. This is what affects people's lives, not Biden.

(115,103 posts)That means people who use it where it's legal to whatever extent still face major problems.
Also the fact that minorities are incarcerated at much higher rates for drug related crimes.

(9,305 posts)Quotes from the Biden speech:
"That's why I want to move it from a schedule 1 drug to a schedule 3 drug" (at the 43 second mark)
and
"Anyone who's been convicted, [it] should not be a crime.... they should be immediately released, their record should be immediately expunged" (at the 58 second mark)

(3,022 posts)there can be no meaningful research while marijuana is a schedule 1 drug. That designation means at a Federal level no one can even have any marijuana to test without nuclear strength waivers. That should have happened when Nixon's commission to find the dangers of marijuana didn't find any major dangers and Nixon disbanded it. If you don't start with marijuana needs to be off schedule 1 and reclassified at a level it can be seriously studied before you say it needs more study you are not serious and your opinion on this matter can be safely disregarded.

(9,305 posts)Unfortunately, things don't work this way. And the research is ongoing and consequential nevertheless.
Is the National Institute of Health research meningless?

Is the Centers of Disease Control research meaningless?

Is Harvard research meaningless?

You will probably find both positive and negative effects of pot described in these studies. Makes legislating pot use all the more difficult.
