Is Steve Bullock the only Democratic presidential candidate to have won in a Trump state?

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democratic presidential candidate, on Nov. 6 announced two new TV ads running in Iowa. In the 30-second “Responsibility” ad, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says he’s supporting Bullock because “Steve is the only Democrat who’s won a state that Trump won.”

Analysis

The Fact Checker is checking this statement because it’s in an ad airing in Iowa and because it’s from one of Iowa’s top elected officials, who happens to be the longest-serving attorney general in the nation.

When Miller endorsed Bullock in May, Miller said he’d been friends with Bullock for 10 years.

Miller didn’t specifically say in the claim that he was talking about elections held in the same year, though that is implied. Nonetheless, we’ll take a more expansive look to make sure the candidates get the benefit of any doubt.

There were 18 Democratic candidates in the race as of Thursday. (And please, let no other candidates jump in between then and now to mess up this check.)

Serving his duty as governor of Montana until the Legislature dismissed and he signed or vetoed legislation was more important because he was doing the job for which he was elected. I can't cast any blame for that.

I am VERY sorry that Bullock did not enter the US Senate race.

THAT is what he should have done. That is what the state party literally BEGGED him to do.

With so many candidates better-known at a national level and some stellar performers at that, I am not surprised that he didn't catch on for the 2020 election.

I am SO disappointed in him.

Even though he may piss some off by doing so, it's probably still not too late for him to enter the MT Senate race instead. He could win that one and give us all another Dem Senator. I believe that he would be a good one.

Certainly MUCH better than the current alternative, who is yet another slavish Trumper.

Although, as there are other candidates who have since presented themselves, this will not be a popular move.

I do believe, however, that he could win. I really don't believe that of any of the other candidates.

Bullock in MT
Sebelius in KS (same as Bullock, pretty much the only Dem who can win)
Sally Yates in GA
Tim McGraw (yes the singer, lol) in TN
Foxx and/or Stein in NC

those 5 are the worst to get turn-downs for

then

Susan Rice in ME (hopefully Sara Gideon can beat the Rethug Susan Collins)
Cindy Axne and Culver in IA (Hopefully Theresa Greenfield can beat that POS Ernst)
Abrams in GA (although I think she will be our VP choice)
Beto in TX (but I understand why he will not, Cornyn is almost impossible to beat)
Ashley Judd in KY (but McTurtle will be so hard to beat)
Begich in AK (so far has declined)

ALL huge turn-downs so far

In total, we have 13 flippable seats (2 are real stretches, TX and KY)

in only TWO (CO and AZ) do we have our best possible candidates running, Schumer and Cortez Masto have been so so poor at recruiting in this VITAL year

But I truly hope Bullock runs for the Senate seat that Daines currently holds.

In re the KY race, per the polls Amy McGrath could have a real chance against McConnell, particularly if people - FINALLY - get enraged over Moscow Mitch.

Honestly, I think that argument wears out pretty quickly. Most interviews I saw with Bullock when the media was discussing possible Dem 2020 candidates and after he announced really didn’t get beyond that fact.
