Much more demanding than the job of a Supreme Court Justice, for example.

And I'm old enough to remember Reagan, the oldest President we'd had up till then at age 69. Reagan was almost a decade younger than a couple of our candidates, and everybody got to watch him sink into Alzheimers (from age 65, the risk doubles every 5 years). But his handlers loved it. He must have been easy to manipulate. Of course, they denied he had Alzheimers for the whole 8 years. Then, a year after his 2nd term ended, they announced that he had a very fast acting form of Alzheimers. Yeah, right.

senator who was so likely to win re-election that no other Democrat besides Biden was willing to run against him. And Biden beat him despite having virtually no money for his campaign and relying on family members to act as campaign staff. He won by getting out and meeting voters. The Republican Biden defeated had been a two-term US senator who'd previously served two terms as governor of Delaware.

20. So all elected officials & presumably civil servants as well do not have "real jobs"?
Thu Nov 21, 2019, 02:27 AM
Nov 2019

We call them public servants. They are not paid hugely. Biden was rare in that for such a long-serving Senator he lived in his salary and left Washington as a not-wealthy man. It was his book deal after he left the Vice Presidency that gave him a nice nest egg, and his wife got a new house. I certainly do not begrudge them that. His reputation for honesty is well-deserved.

As for civil servants, who also are paid via taxes, I have known many and I have been one myself. Every one I've known has worked damn hard. As a general rule they believe in the mission and they believe that what they do benefits the public.

What's a "real job" to you? Is your work "real"? When does it become "unreal"?

Here we are on a political discussion board and someone is griping public servants isn't a "real job". So what are we all doing here, anyway? Discussing people who don't have real jobs?

Sure many people abuse it.. but not everybody.. those are the ones we're here for.

Fri Nov 22, 2019, 01:33 AM
Nov 2019

That is a fact. And the higher you go, the less real it is. People serving at the municipal levels are usually considered "part time" and are expected to hold other jobs. Biden is a multi-millionaire that made over $4 Million last year. There is nothing "real" about that.

I made no comment about civil servants. As you stated, that was a presumption.

But the question still stands. When was the last time Biden made money in a job collecting wages from someone other than the US Gov't?
