Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBooker Slams Biden on Legal-Weed Stance
While speaking at a town-hall event in Las Vegas on Saturday, Joe Biden took a stance that is none too popular in the modern Democratic Party: that marijuana should not yet be legalized on a federal level. Its a debate, the former vice president explained after expressing his belief that marijuana is a gateway drug. Before I legalize it nationally, I want to make sure we know a lot more about the science behind it.
The position drew criticism from the left throughout the week, culminating with a jab from Cory Booker during Thursday nights Democratic debate. I heard him literally say we should not legalize marijuana, the senator said of Biden. I thought you might have been high when you said it.
It was the biggest laugh line of the night.

But Booker wasnt done. Marijuana in our country is already legal for privileged people, he continued, to more applause. Its why the War on Drugs has been a war on black and brown people . With more African Americans under criminal supervision in America than all of the slaves since 1850, do not roll up into communities and not talk directly to issues that are going to relate to the liberation of children. There are people in Congress right now who admit to smoking marijuana, while there are people, our kids, who are in jail right now for those drug crimes.

(9,696 posts)cannabis should not be legal. That's why Booker looked so shocked when Biden came out and said in no uncertain terms it should be legalized.
If the end result is pushing Biden to the legalization side of the issue that's good. My concern is that Biden will backtrack.

Theres not nearly been enough evidence that has been acquired as to whether or not it is a gateway drug, says the former vice president.

This one is a little tricky. So I looked it up and as of the 18th he did make the comment it should not be legalized. That is when there became a stink. Within 24 hours Biden put out a chart on position to clarify.

So, I think you are right and Booker was surprised with the answer because Joe boldly said he was for legalizing but here he is saying only legalize medical marijo.

(68,456 posts)It is not a voting issue for me. And I suspect for most...just a way to go after Biden. Obama had the same view as Biden. We cant pass shit in congress so the states will be where it happens.
