Bernie Sanders Wins the Foreign Policy Debate

(snip)

Sanders seized every opportunity to outline foreign-policy alternatives in the fifth round of Democratic debating. Joining several of the candidates in calling out President’s Trump’s approach to Saudi Arabia, he declared that “Saudi Arabia is not a reliable ally.” Sanders argued that the United States must promote negotiations between the Saudis and the Iranians, telling both “we are sick and tired of us spending huge amounts of money and human resources because of your conflicts.”

That in itself was a strong statement, but the senator did not stop there.

“The same thing goes with Israel and the Palestinians,” said Sanders. “It is no longer good enough for us to be pro-Israel, I am pro-Israel, but we must treat the Palestinians with the dignity they deserve.”

That declaration drew sustained applause from the crowd at MSNBC/Washington Post Democratic primary debate in Atlanta. And rightly so, because Sanders inserted the issue into the debate.

Promoting American isolationism doesn't win the foreign policy debate in my estimation.

His solution to the Iranian-Saudi conflict is to tell them to "knock it off!"

OK. Not serious.

His support for (and from) democratic-socialist dictators is very troubling.

As are the foreign policy stands that he admits are often not that different than those of the current president, "without the lies."

How is promoting isolationism?

"It’s Foreign Policy That Distinguishes Bernie This Time
He’s challenging American exceptionalism in a far more radical way than his 2020 competitors are."

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/02/foreign-policy-distinguishes-bernie-sanders-2020/583279/

"Foreign Policy examined how much money was donated to campaign committees from employees of the State Department, the military, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Justice Department, drawing on data from the Center for Responsive Politics. When combining contribution amounts together, Sanders is the biggest beneficiary of national security support, followed by Buttigieg and Warren. Democratic front-runner Biden and President Donald Trump trail behind those candidates, ranking no higher than third for any one department.

The Atlantic article--written by the well-known critic of Israel, Peter Beinart, confirms that it is quite a stretch to claim that BS has a pro-Israel foreign policy position. Thanks for that.

It also confirms his isolationism, including his distancing himself from the victory of the Cold War, which contained international communism. And it shows his troubling history of support of democratic-socialist/socialist dictatorships.

Beinart substitutes the phrase "challenging American exceptionalism," for isolationism, but the effect is the same. It is a walk-back of American leadership on the world stage.

As to the second source, it is hard to believe that Sanders is the favorite of people who work in America's foreign policy establishment, given Sander's belief that they've gotten it all wrong since the end of WWII.

Gravitas, indeed...

The Nation’s lead Russia analyst (and husband of the magazine’s editor in chief and publisher Katrina Heuvel), has been endorsed by David Duke and the wife of white-nationalist Richard Spencer, as a rare voice of sanity when it comes to U.S.-Russian relations.

But, I s'pose if they said Bernie won, we'll take that unsupported, faith-based allegation rather than objectively research the actual record.
