(1,812 posts)Will we have to argue for what is clearly the just, moral , and principled solution to this crisis ? Another 50 years and 50 years on top of that - in the richest county on earth ? .

JFK1961
(11 posts)For those of us who have lived through both the JFK years and the dark days since Jan. 20, 2017, it remains stunning how one man could leave such a positive legacy in the same exact space of time that another could wreak the havoc we have now witnessed.
As a wealthy man who had seemingly little understanding or interest in civil rights or the plight of the masses, President Kennedy quickly grew into someone who truly was a president for all. He championed openness, health care, wage increases for low earning workers and the Peace Corps. Critics, including some current purists, may claim that he was late to the social agenda and that much of what he proposed was enacted by LBJ--Civil Rights Act, Medicare, Voting Rights Act, etc. The reality is that Johnson would have likely never broached these issues had he been elected in 1960. They were in the public consciousness due to JFK.
While we can agree that Kennedy made missteps in Vietnam, increasing the involvement from the Eisenhower years in a developing conflict that left 191 Americans dead in his administration. However, even that number, horrible in every instance, is 50 less that the American servicemen killed in the Beirut bombing of 1983. And, while he should have stopped, instead of signing off, on the Eisenhower program that led to the Bay of Pigs, he likely averted WW3 with his judgment in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
With all due respect to President Obama (whose leadership I miss every day), for me, JFK will always stand shoulder to shoulder with Washington, Lincoln and FDR at the top ranks of our U.S. Presidents. Eight full years would have made the world today quite different from what we experience.

(7,277 posts)The three brothers were solid Democrats with long records of dedicated service to the party Bloomberg, entering the race at the last minute is an entirely different kettle of fish. No Kennedy would agonize for years on whether they really wanted the responsibilities of presidency.

(7,681 posts)or still against it...or what exactly is your point here?
I mean, I get that you're going for a "lol look Bernie didn't invent it" thing...but it really makes no sense.
You have bashed M4A nonstop and now you're telling us JFK was for it...because...why?
What point does it possibly make for you to show that this Democratic icon totally disagreed with you?
