I just keep settling on Amy Klobuchar as my backup candidate.

If it becomes crystal clear that there's no way for Warren to win enough battleground states (and I'm not there by a long shot - she's demonstrated great persuasive powers). Anyway, when I imagine having to give up on Warren, here's where I am.

Harris - I just like Klobuchar's style better. There's not a lot of difference.

Buttigieg - He's got to pass the POC bar. I know Warren has a problem there too, but she's making steady progress. I think this not just because of winning the general election, but because we owe it to POC not to take them for granted.

Sanders - If Warren can't do it, neither can he.

Booker - His over articulated speaking style grates on me. Perhaps it does on others, too, and explains why he's stuck in the polls? I know that Klobuchar is stuck too, but somehow I feel like it's just because she's always second. I bet there are polls about that?

Steyer - I like him a lot, but resist endorsing the process of getting on the stage because you bought national advertising.

Yang - I'd be totally happy if he took off. He raises issues we need to think about. But I think his appeal is an acquired taste.

Bloomberg - See Styer above, except for the part about "I like him a lot."

Biden - He's just too 77 years old. Warren, on the other hand, is not too 70 years old.

Gabbard - enough said.

Castro - Can't imagine him rising to visibility again.

Who is your backup candidate? How come?

TIA

Word for word I feel precisely, EXACTLY, the same about each candidate! Down to “too 77 years old”! I too keep settling on Amy as my backup, and I think your post crystallizing my thoughts on the matter, has inspired me to commit to making her my first choice.

I'm liking Klobuchar more and all the time. It is a tie between her and Warren. Though I like Warren better (just a bit), I think Klobuchar would do better in a general, but it is too soon to say.

I like her plain speaking, pragmatism and her humor.

When it comes to medicare for all vs improve Obamacare, either one will be an improvement over what we have now. While I strongly support MFA, I think it's unlikely to get passed, unless we take all 3 branches of gov.

about Booker "his over articulted style grates on me."

Now, I am not saying you are racist, biut the fact that when a POC speaks in a way that shows good english , it is coiunted as a liabilioty, says a bit about Am,erican culutre. I remeber how many, includign quitea few here at DU, attacked Obama for tat very same thing.

see if Warren can emerge from her MfA induced slump as well. Aside from her overly enthusiastic embrace of MfA Warren has run an excellent campaign so I'm hoping she can recover. If Warren doesn't up her game I might have to become a Biden supporter. I also like Harris, Mayor Pete, Bennet and Bullock but their prospects seem pretty dim as well.

not sure how she is doing with African Americans. Similar to Buttigieg. The Midwest is still white, except the inner cities. And inner cities citizens do not trust prosecutors - if pointed to them.

And I think that Bloomberg, too, is "just too 77" as is Sanders, plus 1.

My second choice will be Biden. Not only because he is a moderate but because he is the favorite of African Americans in the South, more so, it seems, than Booker and Harris.

I sometimes wonder whether Booker would have had higher ratings had he been married: the good old married couples with two kids and a dog. Or something.

His AA favorables are not so bad, ~2:1 favorable over unfavorable (even though he is almost never first choice). I don't think he'd have a problem beating Trump among AA voters. But getting the nomination would be a challenge!

Recent polls on Buttigieg AA favorability:

Economist/YouGov
34% favorable, 22% unfavorable

Morning Consult
19% favorable, 11% unfavorable

Sanders and Gabbard are my last choices. I'll vote for them if nominated but they're bothguaranteed landslide losers to Dolt45.

We don't need another 1%er in the WH. Or another Russian agent.

Old isn't a problem - we've had older. Racial insensitively - again, we've had worse.

As long as they recognize their limitations & visibly work to overcome/correct them, we'll be fine.

But I have come to make her my first and first by quite a bit.
2 main reasons.

First she will get more done more quickly then any other candidate. We have a huge array of problems that need to be addressed. We need to start addressing them. I'd much prefer to go big but we have to get started. She has always measured herself on what she got done, and will only hype what she is working on when she is working on it. She is much more cynical then people understand and approaches bipartisanship from the perspective of their self interest. Looking at her program ii seems almost designed to force the Republicans to do what they have been saying the will do but have been using games to avoid. When she says she knows where the votes are, she does. It will be hard for the Republicans to go into deep opposition when she will bring out another action to keep them backing up. That is because her plans are more an assemblage of actions that are presented as plans.

Second there is not a down ballot candidate that will run away from her. Some in deep blue districts may run to push her but candidates in purple and red districts will find plenty to hang on to and support.

primary today, I would vote for:
