It's been what, 25 days since Sen. Sanders said he would "soon" release his full tax returns?

Last edited Fri Mar 22, 2019, 08:16 PM - Edit history (1)

What happened?

Is this his definition of "soon"?

And this is NOT a bash or an attack on the senator. It is a valid question.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

I assume that Sanders has submitted at least up through 2017's returns.

He has more than enough money to afford an accountant, and if one is planning on running for POTUS, I imagine that one hires a professional to make sure that they are in order.

I realize that Trump probably reported different things on his tax returns than he submitted to banks for loans, so I can see why he would be hesitant to release his returns.

I can't imagine that Senator Sanders has anything that is questionable in his tax returns, and I'm puzzled as to his statements that "mechanical issues" are preventing him from releasing his.

A false dilemma is a type of informal fallacy in which something is falsely claimed to be an "either/or" situation, when in fact there is at least one additional option. A false dilemma can arise intentionally, when a fallacy is used in an attempt to force a choice or outcome.

As a matter of fact, I had someone question whether I should be on this Forum because I have criticized the Democratic party. Let me make one thing clear, my criticism is meant to be constructive. If the Party platform wasn't in support of gay marriage, I would be against it and would argue my point. If I believe that there should be a Single Payer option, I will express my views and encourage the Dem party to go that route. If the Dems were against Single Payer, I won't just say "OK" just because that is the Dem platform. If there is a candidate running for president, I will listen to what their stance is on the issues. I have seen horrible candidates that had a "D" next to their name. With that being said, the worse Democrat is still better than a republican!

That you are the definition of reason, and to be other is to be a "blind follower." Go back and read the question you were responding to when you said that you weren't a "blind follower."

Just because someone has a "D" next to their name doesn't necessarily mean they are automatically a good candidate.

No one here is stating that, so that's attacking a straw man, in addition to a false dillema.

I will agree that when certain individual Democratic POTUS candidates (who run for POTUS with a "D" next to their name) and certain House reps with a "D" next to their name are critiqued/vetted in even themost basic ways, or even simply fact checked, their fans will go on the offensive in their defense, and accuse those doing any critiquing or fact checking of "hate," or "corporate-funded attacks" rather than clear-eyed observations of human beings in political life. That's happened to me, in fact, so one can't simply dismiss me, even in a backhanded way, as a "blind follower" for pointing out that you do far more than the average amount of criticizing and slamming of the Democratic Party here on DU.

Does that clarifiy things for you?

I will not blindly follow a party. If I think a party should have a different stance on something, I will try and encourage the party to go in that direction. Hypothetically, let's just say the Democratic party was against Gay Marriage. I would voice my opinion that I believe in Gay Marriage. I may voice my opinion on here, I may contact my local Rep, I may email the head of the party. I enjoy having a debate on issues as there are times where I am persuaded and my mind changed, other times it's not. I just don't feel that the sole reason one should vote for someone is because of what letter they have next to their name. I will look at the candidate and their stance on the issues, not what letter is next to their name. Plain and simple.

Btw, I'm still waiting for someone to show me where I said that people need to agree with ALL my criticisms.

And you sigh, and you say, "That's not what I asked, is it?"

Usually that child is sheepish and says, "No, it isn't" and doesn't keep digging themselves deeper into a hole by continuing to try to avoid the actual issue.

Every President in my lifetime (51 years) with the exception of LBJ and Trump released his tax returns. Zero, count it zero Presidents were asked for birth certificates until the first black one. On top of that Sanders promised not once, not twice, not thrice, but on countless occasions to release these only to not follow through. I don't recall Obama promising even once without following through (nor should he have promised a birth certificate). To compare a request that is so reasonable that it has been fullfilled by Nixon, Ford. Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2, and Obama with a request that was on its face racist is pure filth.

There is often a trend here to respond with "tax returns" to anything regarding Sen. Sanders. This pattern strikes me as similar to the tendency to patterns seen towards President Obama with throwing out a response of "birth certificate" or towards Clinton with "emails" by their respective opponents. The behavior and rhetoric is the same to me though the situations are drastically different.

Running for president 12 years later, Bill Clinton released a dozen years’ worth of tax returns. He stopped just short of the year in which he and his wife had reported her spectacular gains. The couple and the campaign refused to explain why the release of tax returns didn’t go back further. Nosing around, Jeff Gerth followed the trail to Red Bone, Jim Blair, and the windfall they had bestowed on Hillary. To explain the $98,000 profit, Clinton spokesmen said Hillary had handled the trades according to information she gleaned from her daily reading of the Wall Street Journal. Hillary herself spoke of how much she had learned as a little girl reading the financial pages of the Chicago Tribune with her father. And the spokesmen pointed out that no reporter or investigator had found a—here’s the familiar phrase—quid pro quo among Tyson Foods, Jim Blair, the first lady, and the governor.

https://www.weeklystandard.com/andrew-ferguson/the-hillary-paradox

Now clearly this is an anti Clinton source but even they say he released a dozen (that is more than 10 in case you are unsure of that) while running for President (that is before 1994 in case you are unsure of that). Shame on you for telling such a blatant falsehood about Clinton to justify the unjustifyable.

Burlington College contracting with Jane's daughtet, Carina Driscoll, to run a wood-workinlg shop while Jane was president. While the board of trustees approved the decision and it was legal to do so, it doesn't pass the smell test.

Hiring Jane's son, David Driscoll, to run the Sanders Institute at $100K when he had no prior experience running a non-profit.

Both were sweetheart deals.

The issue with Old Towne Media is whether campaign donations were converted into personal income. The tax returns will shed some light on the subject.

It's shows great disrespect to the American voters who deserve to know whether the person they're voting for is honest and ethical or not. Voters need to know how a candidate is making their money and where it's coming from. Are the taxes being paid on time? Are there questionable write-offs or deductions? Where is it being invested? Where is it being saved (domestic banks or "off shore" banks)?

When any candidate withholds the information, it's perfectly natural and quite logical to assume that he (or she) is hiding something and that he (or she) has made a calculated, and cynical, decision that the fallout from NOT releasing their full tax returns is probably better than the fallout that may happen if they DO release the tax returns.

His goal has been to get the nomination and destroy the party.

He doesn't even care as much about winning the election as he does destroying the party.

So the fact that he will never disclose his taxes doesn't matter to him. He can stonewall and still have a chance at the nomination, but being attacked for not releasing them is even better for him, because he can claim the "party" is anti-democratic and needs to be shut down.

If you can't be accepted by it, destroy it. EVERYTHING he did in 2015 until now supports that.

And we still don't have them. He needs to disclose 2005 on, no matter when he releases them, because the dirt is probably before 2010.

I won’t vote for anyone who doesn’t release all his taxes for the last five years, at least, by the time of my state’s primary. That includes a candidate for whom I would otherwise vote; it isn’t a matter of politics. Obama was asked for two birth certificates, and although that had never been asked of any other president, he provided them, because he had nothing to hide. I want a candidate who has nothing to hide to go against Trump, because we can’t risk a second Trump term just because one candidate shares our politics more than others.

His message is based on a revolution of people demanding the government represent them and not campaign contributors and big money interests; America will be transformed when money is taken out of politics because politicians (who are all corrupt) will finally be free to pass progressive legislation.

172. Washington Post-Enough with the excuses. It's time for Sanders to release his tax returns.

It has been more than a month since Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told a national audience during a CNN town hall that he would release 10 years of his personal taxes “soon,” adding, “We have to do just a few little more things.” Five weeks later, it seems those “little” things still aren’t done; he told CBS on Sunday that “we have it all done and it’s just a question of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

Enough with the excuses, Senator. These sorts of shenanigans — and make no mistake, that’s exactly what they are at this point — both reduce the pressure on cowardly congressional Democrats to pursue President Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns, and endanger Democrats’ hopes of taking back the presidency in 2020. The progressive positions that Sanders champions, including Medicare-for-all, expanded Social Security and increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour, are much too important to both the future of our country and our own personal finances to risk them over tax returns.

Trump broke with decades of precedent in refusing to make his tax returns public when he was running for president. The result? Not only don’t we know our president’s net worth, we also have little idea how he earned his fortune or how he makes his money now. Minus his paperwork, it’s hard to determine whether Trump is using the White House as a just-in-time moneymaking opportunity, violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, and/or even paying his fair share of taxes at all.
