Bernie Sanders Unveils 'College for All' Plan To Support HBCUs

(snip)

Some highlights from the plan include the expansion of Pell Grants by enabling students from low-income families to use aid to cover room and board, books, and living expenses, and the removal of barriers for college students to access nutrition assistance benefits, according to his website.

At the event, he also unveiled a $5 billion plan to train more teachers at HBCUs, and a separate $5 billion program aimed at preparing more Black dentists and other healthcare professionals, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We have to make sure that in African American communities there are the doctors, the nurses, the psychologists are there to provide the care that the people in those communities need,” he said at the event, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

(snip)

The website also highlights how through the plan he’ll provide $1.3 billion to private, nonprofit HBCUs and MSIs per year to eliminate or significantly reduce tuition and fees. This funding would support some 200 schools which serve at least 35 percent low-income students.

Furthermore the small victories can be counted as the over one million individual donors (more than any other candidate) that have contributed to Bernie's campaign.

free tuition for all colleges, trade schools, etc. etc.

According to his website, if elected commander-in-chief, Sanders, 78, will pass the College for All Act to provide at least $48 billion per year to eliminate tuition and fees at four-year public colleges and universities, tribal colleges, community colleges, trade schools, and apprenticeship programs.

was/is not hurting.

Johns Hopkins University is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1876, the university was named for its first benefactor, the American entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist Johns Hopkins.[4] His $7 million bequest (approximately $144.5 million in today's dollars)—of which half financed the establishment of Johns Hopkins Hospital—was the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the United States up to that time.[5] Daniel Coit Gilman, who was inaugurated as the institution's first president on February 22, 1876,[6] led the university to revolutionize higher education in the U.S. by integrating teaching and research.[7] Adopting the concept of a graduate school from Germany's ancient Heidelberg University, Johns Hopkins University is considered the first research university in the United States.[8] Over the course of several decades, the university has led all U.S. universities in annual research and development expenditures. In fiscal year 2016, Johns Hopkins spent nearly $2.5 billion on research.[9]

Johns Hopkins is organized into 10 divisions on campuses in Maryland and Washington, D.C., with international centers in Italy and China.[10] The two undergraduate divisions, the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering, are located on the Homewood campus in Baltimore's Charles Village neighborhood.[11] The medical school, the nursing school, and the Bloomberg School of Public Health are located on the Medical Institutions campus in East Baltimore.[12] The university also consists of the Peabody Institute, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, the School of Education, the Carey Business School, and various other facilities.[13]

(snip)

JHU's undergraduate education is ranked 10th among U.S. "national universities" by U.S. News & World Report for 2019.[84] For medical research U.S. News & World Report ranks the School of Medicine in 2017 tied for 3rd in the U.S.[85] and the Bloomberg School of Public Health 1st.[85] The School of Nursing was ranked 1st nationally for master's degrees.[85] The QS Top Universities ranked Johns Hopkins University No. 5 in the world for medicine.[86] As of 2008, Hopkins ranked No. 1 nationally in receipt of federal research funds,[87] and was the top recipient of NIH research grants in 2019, both in terms of dollar amount and number of grants.[88] In 2016, the Johns Hopkins Hospital was ranked the No. 4 hospital in the United States by the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of American hospitals.[89]

The School of Education is ranked No. 2 nationally by U.S. News & World Report for 2017.[85] In 2015, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) ranked 2nd in the world in Foreign Policy's Top Master's Programs for Policy Career in International Relations ranking.[90]

How can a proposal to help HBCU's be called "College for All"? Have "historic black colleges and universities" changed in the last week or two?

Or is he just going to attach "for all" to anything he proposes, just like he blithely uses "new deal" for many of his proposals?

bloodless "revolution" (terrified it's already too late for that--with climate changes of extinction so close, anyway) and most of our candidates have wonderful ideas to improve what has come before, at least during my lifetime, (OK-boomer?) the abject corruption of those at the pinnacle of wealth and the power-wielding Republican party platforms that amount to WMDs against us, our country under rule of law, and the world - we have to believe that we can persist, resist, and unite to get to that turning point that can close the wealth gap that powers corruption and closes opportunities that aren't necessarily measured in money but in kindness, respect, and gratitude while remaining healthy, educated, and competitive. I've seen absolutely nothing of these virtues in Republican policies or this administration's "best people" except that which propel the haters, the abusers, the cheaters, and the too lazy to be bothered. We've seen how digital technology has made our lives easier, but has it made it any safer from manipulations by TPTB. For the future of our kids, grandkids, and all future generations of free people, chose wisely but choose Blue.
