Warren: Native Americans should be 'part of the conversation' on reparations

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 02/23/19 08:52 AM EST

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Friday indicated that Native Americans would be part of her plan to provide reparations for slavery and other past crimes committed by the U.S. government.

The Washington Post reports that Warren told the McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club Dinner in Manchester, New Hampshire that including Native Americans would be "an important part of the conversation" about reparations, for which several Democratic candidates have announced support.

Warren is one of several of the so far more than 10 announced high-profile Democratic challengers who have backed reparations, the others being Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), former HUD secretary Julián Castro, and author Marianne Williamson.

When asked at the dinner Friday night to explain her position on reparations, Warren pointed to America's "ugly history" of racism and noted her own bill to address housing discrimination against African-Americans.

“America has an ugly history of racism,” Warren told attendees, according to the Post. “We need to confront it head-on. And we need to talk about the right way to address it and make change.”

Might be popular in a few small circles but in general I don't think the public wants anything to do with y. It gives the right another "free stuff" talking point. Russian trolls will have a field day with this issue if it gains any traction.

I am sure the vast majority of voters will be totally against this. This issue could kill us if we make a big deal out of it.

This is an absolute loser of an issue. Deal with civil rights if you want to. Reparations will never be the model to follow.
