Warren: Native Americans should be 'part of the conversation' on reparations

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said on Friday that Native Americans should be “part of the conversation” on reparations, The Washington Post reported.

Warren, a 2020 Democratic presidential contender, made the remarks to about 900 supporters at New Hampshire's annual McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club Dinner.

Warren is one of several 2020 Democratic candidates who have backed reparations, including Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro.

When asked at the dinner Friday night to explain her position on reparations, Warren pointed to America's "ugly history" of racism and noted her own bill to address housing discrimination against African-Americans.

I support reparations but get stuck on it being a millstone around the neck of our nominee.

But I think that’s my privilege talking. If now is not the time for reparations, then when?

It’s a bold, progressive stance to take. And that is the zeitgeist. I love how Warren is including native Americans, too.

Racial justice doesn’t just stand still if we lose in 2020. The GOP in power worstens the situation, and there’s a risk of an entire new generation being harmed.

Reparations are morally justified (by way of regeneration programs) but they could well lose us an election and by proxy cause massive harm.

If you personally are affected by unjust policies, it gets tiring to be told to wait.

But I get what you’re saying. We need to win to start righting the ship. But that doesn’t change the fact that possible front runners have come out in favor of reparations. We need to face what that means.

And if it was a straight question of equality rights then I’d agree with you 100%. Maybe I’m wrong on this, but it just feels like a huge risk that could backfire spectacularly. I definitely don’t discount what you’re saying though, and you could be the one in the right on this.
