(11,238 posts)To me, her evolution shows that she's a thinker and has underlying principles. I list myself as Undecided, but Elizabeth Warren is my favored candidate. It's good to know your candidate's background.

I would like to hear what was so attractive about the republicans in the 1980s. Because I still dont get it. All I remember is homophobia, religious hysteria, racism and cruelty from 1980s republicans.

But this author is badly confused when he calls them both populists. Populism emphatically does NOT mean something noble like "of, by and for the people" the way our democracy does.
Populism is a negative energy of inflamed anger and resentment against "elites" and "establishment." It's primary focus is not on creating advances but on attacking what makes them angry and is inherently destructive if not controlled.
All over the planet the kinds who are drawn to populist movements, always large numbers of them social conservatives full of antagonism toward a lot more than just elites, are threatening to destroy the very democracies that give them the power to destroy.
And populist leaders are usually men who cannot gain power with support from other leaders who respect them, so they seek to take it from outside by inciting angry divisions among the electorate. Anything sound familiar? Both Trump and Sanders are populist leaders in the U.S., very different in many respects but similar in some strategies of populist leadership.
Senator Warren, like President Obama and FDR and his New Dealers, is the very opposite of a populist. She is a positive achiever by nature and practice and works to harness the enormous power and organization of established, stable governmental systems to accomplish what they can and should, to use the power of the establishment as FDR did to improve itself, to correct societal inequalities, solve big problems, create big advances, and elevate our entire nation.
Notably, Warren would never, ever try to steal her election. But undermining principles of democracy that thwart their rise to power is common among populist leaders.
Btw, Warren was talking last night again about giving farmers, and others, back the "right to repair" that's been taken away. In other words, we should enact needed regulation. Currently, many companies require all their products to be repaired by them -- shipped at owner's cost to their facilities and performed for whatever price they demand. She, and her Democratic colleagues, would require manufacturers to provide instructions and sell parts so owners can once again do their own repairs or have them done locally. The way it used to be before this predatory practice became entrenched.
They'll do it, too, and much, much more crying out to be done, when the electorate gives the Democratic Party more power than the Republican Party in the next election.

My idea of a "progressive" politician is one that puts great value on making progress... finding common ground... compromising... but all the while, making PROGRESS.
Other than for vanity purposes, it serves no good purpose to remain STAGNANT just so that one person can BOAST about how PURE he (or she) is and how he (or she) didn't give in and stuck to his (or her) guns... regardless of how many people suffer in the meantime.
That, to me, is NOT PROGRESS!
