Jay Inslee becomes third presidential candidate to release tax returns

MARCH 29, 2019 / 12:21 PM / AP

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday became the latest Democratic presidential candidate to release his tax returns, while bashing President Donald Trump for refusing such a disclosure.

"It's time for him to come clean with the American people," Inslee said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends," adding that he was issuing his challenge on the Republican president's "favorite show," a nod to Mr. Trump's habit of watching the network's morning show and often tweeting in response.

Mr. Trump first refused such disclosure as a candidate ahead of his 2016 election, saying he was under audit. Mr. Trump's business dealings and his now-shuttered foundation have been the subject of various investigations and Democratic attacks.

Still, Inslee, who announced his campaign at the beginning of this month, is just the third announced Democratic White House contender to release his personal returns, joining Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

A mere month ago:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday pledged to “sooner than later” make public 10 years of his tax returns and vowed to support the eventual Democratic presidential nominee, saying he held no grudges against the Democratic National Committee over his unsuccessful 2016 campaign.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/bernie-sanders-set-to-release-10-years-of-tax-returns-2019-02-26

But by all means, let's try to deflect to KAMALA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As if Kamala would get away with promising 10 years of taxes a month ago... then changing it. She would be FLAYED for that, yes?

It sounds as if the 'standard' for other candidates "evolves" year to year, and now month to month.

Then years later promised 10 years, then revised that one month later.

….than 99% of Senate candidates.

There is a different standard for Presidential candidates, has been for quite some time. Since she was willing to do so as a Senate candidate I'm sure she'll release more, and not three years after she runs.

For the record, here is an indication of the "standard" for Presidential candidates from both parties:

https://www.taxnotes.com/presidential-tax-returns

trump - 1
Gillibrand - 12
Inslee - 12
Sanders - 1 (from two years prior)
Warren - 10
Pence (even!) - 10
Jeb Bush - 32
Hillary Clinton - 16
Cruz - 4
Fiorina - 2
Kasich - 7
Rubio - 5
Stein - 1
Kaine - 9
Obama - 9
Gingrich - 1
Romney - 2
Ryan - 2
Santorum - 4
Biden - 18
McCain - 2
Palin - 2
gw bush - 8
Cheney - 8
Kerry - 5
Bill Clinton - 8
GHW Bush - 3
Reagan - 6
Carter - 3
Ford - 1
Nixon - 4
Truman - 36
FDR - 25

All but two of those candidates released their CURRENT tax returns when they ran.
I'm sure this year's Democratic candidates will catch up shortly, not three years from now.

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one
No is the saddest experience you'll ever know
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know
'Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number, whoa-oh, worse than two
It's just no good anymore since you went away
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest
One is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
It's just no good anymore since you went away

There is only one person here promoting a false equivalence by stating that there is a "Kamala standard."

30. He had, until WAPO fact checked him, and revealed that he had actually only released a summary.
Fri Mar 29, 2019, 04:51 PM
Mar 2019

April 5:

Plainly put, Sanders has not released his full federal tax return. The little he has released was the Form 1040 in 2014, which is a summary of his tax filing that gives a snapshot of his finances — not what is considered a full tax return. The Sanders campaign confirmed to The Washington Post that it has not released other tax returns prior to 2014, which is a sharp contrast to Clinton’s voluminous release of her complete tax returns.
.............................................................
While Sanders rejected Tapper’s assertion that the public has no access to all of Sanders’s tax returns, we have no evidence he has released any other federal income tax return than the Form 1040 from 2014. The campaign confirmed to The Washington Post that it did not release other tax returns prior to 2014.

[Update: On April 15, 2016, Sanders released his 2014 full federal tax return, showing the couple earned just over $200,000 and paid $8,350 in charitable contributions. However, Sanders has not released to which charities he contributed.]

Fri Mar 29, 2019, 03:52 PM
Mar 2019

....Senate candidates or lower aren't expected to release their tax returns. But since she was so forthcoming for her SENATE campaign, I'm sure there will be more coming, not just 2018. The same thing for Cory Booker - he released a number of returns (I've seen different articles on him, one said 15 years) for a SENATE campaign.

Both have done more than Sanders has done, and neither were Presidential candidates at the time.

You always keep harking back to that 2014 return like that was a groundbreaking event. It wasn't. Once again, it wasn't his most recent at that time, even though he promised the 2015 return several times. Now three years later (next month will be the 3-year anniversary of those promises, in fact) he still hasn't done what he already said he'd do. That was the first time he and Jane said "soon".

So his now one-month old promise of "soon" doesn't hold much water, using past performance that "soon" could very well turn out to be 2022, if ever.

40. Yes, ask Kamala what she's hiding, under YOUR standard for Bernie, by releasing only one year

of her tax returns - like Bernie has done - instead of ten years. Let me know what she says.

and not deliver.

You seem to be getting more anxious by the minute when Bernie is held to his own standard, as stated by Bernie, years ago, and then last month.

Maybe it's time to relax and take a deep breath....

Frantic whataboutism doesn't show much confidence in one's position.

I don't know why you insist on comparing Sanders to Harris. Why not compare him to Gillibrand (12) or Warren (10)?

But back to Harris, once again she was running for SENATE, not President, in 2016 when she released that one (same election year when Sanders released his one), but hers was for 2015, not 2014.

And, obviously, the voting public couldn't care less when Bernie ultimately will release his tax returns... Bernie is leading in the polls... and for good reason!! Bernie dominates all his fellow Democrats when it comes to consistently leading on progressive issues ... and for his ENTIRE political career.

We can't afford to be stuck with tRumpy another 4 years... our country wont survive it. We desperately need Bernie, who's popularity is second to none, and who can, no doubt, send that fuckwad packin'!!

You should take your own advice, and "calm down and relax." Scolding and blaming others for one's upset doesn't reflect well on one's reasons for supporting a particular candidate. Not a good persuasive method... because reacting as if one is being personally attacked when one's candidate is scrutinized derails political discussion instead of continuing it. Someone trying to take away the ball and stop the game if they are up on points isn't convincing people they are a skilled player.

61. Not releasing taxes is like "Pleading-the-Fifth...
Fri Mar 29, 2019, 06:00 PM
Mar 2019

... and I do understand that "Pleading-the-Fifth" isn't proof of wrongdoing, but it certainly is suspicious when someone DOES plead-the-fifth. That's how I see this. It's very suspicious.

People have the right to know if the person they're considering voting for is a tax cheat or not... and where their money comes from... and where it's invested... and where it's being saved/banked (ie: domestic or off-shore havens).

Knowing which charities a wealthy candidate supports is also a good indication of their character and priorities. But, if a candidate doesn't contribute to charities, then I suppose that could be a powerful reason to want to withhold the intimate details of their tax returns. It could be embarrassing.

Best to let people have their own unconfirmed suspicions than to prove them right... that's what I think someone on his campaign has advised him to do. His cynical Stein-supporting staffers would definitely advise him that the negative publicity of NOT releasing the taxes is "better" than the negative publicity of actually releasing them.

Isn't that sad? What a sad commentary it is. In my opinion.

primary today, I would vote for:

59. Where are Bernie's tax returns? What's he hiding?

Personally, I see this as a great big "fuck you" to the voters and to all the other candidates. It show GREAT DISRESPECT to the American people and it's making a mockery of any previous pledge to be transparent. And for all the other times that someone urged transparency in others, it's the height of hypocrisy to not release the full and complete tax returns for ten years!

97. Old-wealth FDR released 25 YEARS of returns!
Sat Mar 30, 2019, 08:03 AM
Mar 2019

I didn't know that but like learning it. A bright note in this thread.

Still, surely 10 years would be enough, allowing people time to leave behind old behaviors that may or may not have once been considered acceptable under the laws and practices of those times but have not been repeated for at least a decade?

As for Sanders, just as before, he doesn't want to disclose and knows he won't win the primary, so again he will continue to promise but not come through (Barr didn't exactly invent the "lull" tactic) until the issue is supposedly moot. Except that he never really stopped campaigning, so for him this is just delay ongoing since 2015.

How about this: ONE standard for all? Surely we can come together on that? Nondisclosure bad in all candidates, disclosure good, move on to other issues.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

then and isn't extinct now, but all the smoke and mirrors make it hard to see, or notice missing.

Reminds me that most of our very famous national journalists of those days appallingly dismissed Truman, "the haberdasher," as an incompetent little accident of history, horrifying for what it says about pack journalism, but Democratic voters were less closed-minded in his case and appreciated him more than they believed the toxic groupthink of people like Edward R. Murrow and his circle.
