Pete Buttigieg is the poster child for a changing America

Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is just one of the many Democratic candidates for president with a gold-plated resume. What makes Buttigieg real impressive is that he’s only 37. “Mayor Pete,” as he’s known, had to start early in order to build such a long resume so quickly.

As a high school senior, he won a JFK Profiles in Courage essay contest.

He went on to receive degrees from Harvard and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

He served in Afghanistan in Naval Intelligence and he received a Joint Services Commendation Medal for his counterterrorism duty in a combat zone.

He was first elected as mayor of South Bend when he was only 29. He won re-election with 80 percent of the vote.

The Washington Post called him “the most interesting mayor you never heard of.”

President Obama said he was one of four Democrats who represent the future of the Democratic Party.

Buttigieg is proficient in 7 languages other than English: Norwegian, French, Spanish, Italian, Maltese, Arabic, and Dari.

Oh, and by the way, he’s gay and married.

Seriously? Many of his accomplishments are listed in the OP.

Let's see him in a debate with the other candidates and we will know if he's got it or not.

We’ll see who stands out. I hope Buttigieg and/or Yang will consider VP position with a more experienced Democrat if things shake out in that direction.

I am open and excited about our candidates and I believe we do need a tectonic shift - we have no time for incrementalism.

Will we be saying President Pete in two years? Time will tell.

8. He's impressive, but I don't like the double standard regarding statewide office.

O'Rourke's detractors keep saying he should've run for the Senate seat in Texas instead of running for president.

Why doesn't Buttigieg run for state office in Indiana instead of running for president?

10. Because he's ready, and the country is needy.

There is NO analogy between Pete's experience and that of O'Rourke, an executive (Mayor) and a legislator.

12. O'Rourke isn't ready? He doesn't have experience?

A two-term mayor of a midsize city versus a three-term congressman?

It's a good thing I'm still undecided because if this is the benchmark then count me out or I'll look more to the Andrew Yangs or Stacey Abramses instead.

14. If this is the case, it's no wonder NYC mayor Bill DeBlasio is thinking about running.

He has executive experience and NYC is way larger than South Bend, Indiana. Shoot, Andrew Gillum should run for president as well.

Plus, wasn't O'Rourke on the El Paso city council? It's not like he doesn't know about small cities.

The State House is deep, deep red thanks to gerrymandering.

I don’t know why others were complaining about Beto - I take him seriously and should look at his record in Congress more carefully than I have to date.

I'm with Pete because I think he's the best communicator of everyone, but O'Rourke is good too. Resumes don't win election, people do.
