Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhat role will Evangelicals play in the election?
We all know that white evangelicals love Trump. However, his support is weakening a bit. They won't vote for a Dem but some may stay home on election day. When Bush faced the same problem in 04, Karl Rove made sure same sex marriage initiatives were on the ballot in several key states to bring out white evangelicals to vote.
This year I wonder if some white evangelicals who are not too crazy about Trump might be driven to the polls to vote against a gay man or a Jewish man or a Catholic or any woman. Thoughts?

(3,974 posts)My concern is how they will react to a gay man or woman or jew or catholic.

(14,854 posts)I haven't seen any evidence that his level of support among white Evangelicals is shrinking. I think it's wishful thinking.
Anyway, it wasn't just white Evangelical Christians who voted for Trump in 2016, although their numbers were overwhelming. The majority of Christians overall voted for him - 58% of Protestants, 52% of Catholics, and 61% of Mormons.

(3,541 posts)The number of atheists are gaining in number. Evangelicals are only hurting themselves by connecting themselves to trump. That poll only tells me the percentage of evangelicals that are voting for trump not how many evangelicals there are overall.

(14,854 posts)I don't see any evidence of that, either. Even if it did, what about all the other flavors of Christians who voted for Trump, and who will enthusiastically do it again? Christians still outnumber non-Christians in the US by a HUGE margin.

(15,220 posts)I'm sorry, but the Evangelicals are the dumbest group of people on the planet - easily convinced and manipulated. I have zero respect for them and I do not believe they represent the true Christian ideals.

(7,591 posts)quite scary to listen to those folks. Unbelievable actually. It just proves that people will believe anything. I actually believe that these types of folks will do anything. What do they teach in schools these days?

(15,220 posts)Can't have "their" kids tainted by regular kids, you know!!!
They believe whatever it takes to justify their hatred, their contempt and their stupidity. They twist scripture and selectively pick scripture and throw it out as inarguable. Truth be told, you could put ten of them in a room and every damn one of them would ultimately admit that they think the other nine are going to hell. To me, this is what needs to happen. Instead of lumping them all in one category, we need to learn to pit the Baptists against the Church of Christs, etc.

(25,183 posts)He's already delivered on his promises to them, two SCOTUS Justices, with the promise of RBG's seat to come will surely motivate them if nothing else does.
Besides, they really like Pence, and are willing to put up with another Trump term to give the boost to Pence for the 2024 nomination. Also, if Trump can survive just over half of his second term, Pence will be eligible to run for the White House in both 2024 and 2028.
Don't confuse "approval rating" with "will vote for". Lots of Trump voters don't always approve of him, but they find him preferable to any Democratic nominee we eventually select. Also, people don't always tell pollsters the whole truth.
