Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPete voters aren't necessarily Biden voters
I'm seeing many people make the mistake of thinking Biden and Buttigieg have the same appeal, they do in some ways and in others the two are night and day. People aren't just going to anoint Biden as there pick because Buttigieg is out. Also the rush to Biden after SC is a little predictable and premature as Super Tuesday could rewrite the script for everyone. It's fun and all to root for "our guy or gal" but the thought needs to be how do we start to pivot the parties narrative after Tuesday. Regardless of who comes out in the lead we need to start respecting the ideological left of the party. We need to avoid the same talking points of the pundits and Republicans who say we cant ask for more than what the Republicans are willing to give us. In the same vein we have to be willing to have the uncomfortable conversation of what is too much to ask for. Where does the political calculus lead us to offer up our principles and compromise for some movement of issues. Getting chicken when we ask of steak is progress when NOTHING is the alternative. May the will of the people be respected and listened too. Regardless of who wins.

(984 posts)The most likely scenario is the same one we are in with Sanders as the frontrunner. if this plays out as it seems to be when do we start coming to a real understanding of the issues beyond sh*t talk?!? Trump won because he played to people's displeasure with the current political system. In many ways I'm willing to concede that Sanders is doing the same thing but with better intentions. This doesn't mean we cant start thinking outside of talking points. If sanders is the Nominee how will you start explaining Democratic Socialism when asked are will you just mumble about how your candidate of choice was cheated?

(4,370 posts)I guess we do have an understanding of "sh*t talk". I don't think I will have to explain to anyone about Sanders when he has no actual plans and responds with anger and irritation when pressed for any details regarding his lack of transparency for his big ideas. You have the cart before the horse. I won't be mumbling either. This isn't about socialism. It's about a candidate who has nothing more than a stump speech and a track record of accomplishing very little in terms of actual policy. If you think he is suddenly going to morph into a politician who can negotiate major policy changes and win friends and influence people I have a swamp to sell you. Getting elected will only be the start of his uphill climb. I am rather curious to see how his anger and frustration are going to play out on a national stage when he faces opposition. I guess he can always blame someone else. Or get Sirota to put out false and misleading attacks.

(509 posts)Buttigieg has been called the following by Bernie supporters:
Mayo Pete
Wall Street Pete
Mayor Cheat
He has been called a "rat" and had a rat emoji associated with him by Bernie supporters.
In the most recent debates, Pete went out of his way to attack Bernie and *NOT* attack Joe.
Pete fans will have very little crossover to Bernie.

(984 posts)538 states this :
Sanders is still the favorite to win a plurality of delegates, but those chances dropped slightly too, from 63 percent to 60 percent, while Bidens plurality chances increased from 34 to 36 percent.
If he wins plurality isn't the top of the ticket we will lose period. The party will be fractured and that plurality will not just fall in line. With the majority of his supporters being younger we could really hurt our party for decades.

(25,418 posts)The only people plugging that narrative are Sanders supporters, because they don't understand how it works.
Sanders understands how it works, but pretends he doesn't. It's the same process he was in support of in 2016 and was involved in adjusting for 2020. His protestations to the contrary now are disingenuous and intentionally misleading.

(1,656 posts)Although there is strong evidence that many will gravitate to Biden if Mayor Pete endorses Biden tomorrow.
Even if they all break evenly across Sanders, Warren, Biden and Bloomberg as recent polls suggest re: second choice of voters, it will hurt Biden in delegates because there is real possibility that at least 3 will break 15% threshold in California.
Well see how it plays out, but we are now finally really in primary season!

(7,828 posts)Sanders ran ads claiming that he won Iowa.
That was a lie.
He lost Iowa, and his forcing unnecessary additional reporting on the state just so he could claim a false victory via a useless metric (i.e., the popular vote in a caucus) resulted in stealing the spotlight away from Buttigieg's surprising and historic win there.

(984 posts)There remain, however, two Iowa winners, since Sanders edged Buttigieg in two measurements of raw votes, based on initial (a 6,100-vote Sanders lead) and then on realigned (a 2,500-vote lead) preferences. The DNC required that Iowa release these numbers along with SDEs after Sanders supporters claimed in 2016 that he had really won (it was impossible to determine without the raw preference numbers).
